Went to No Problem Raceway last nite for Test N' Tune. Ran 14.006/14.339/13.998/14.256/13.989/14.04/14.108/13.994/14.001/13.987/14.178/14.241/14.195/14.153. 60' were 2.036/2.302/2.162/2.267/2.075/2.098/2.105/2.074/2.061/2.064/2.089/2.118/2.162/2.124.

I was running 3 different tunes on 3 different Diablo chips. The 14.339/14.256 were due to poor traction.

Beat;
Dodge 5.7 Hemi Mag P/U
Mustang GT
BMW 328
Eclipse
Dodge V-8 modified P/U.

In the staging lanes I was lined up next to a rear engined dragster. I asked the staff if I had to run next to the dargster and he waived a Mustang GT around. I am sure the Mustang GT thought this will be an easy kill!

I am concentrating because I am determined to beat him. I feel I will need all I can get on the reaction time on him as a head start. This is my 9th run to nite so I know what to expect.

We line up, I am solely zoned in on the 3rd yellow, rpms up to 900, 3rd lite and bam I hit it for a .193 R/T to his .272. My 60' is 2.061 to his 2.266. Yahoo, my 330 is 5.858 to his 6.109. My 1,000' is 11.702 to his 11.856.

I am ahead enough that he is out of my peripheral vision, can't see him, but know he is there. My 1/4 is 14.001 to his 14.114.

I beat him by .1922, of which .079 was on my better R/T and .113 was on my better ET.

Several people commented on how fast the car runs and are amazed that it is a sub 14.00 car. Every time I have been to the track I have had one person ask if it is S/C?

There's a big race coming up so there were a lot of sub 10.00 cars. One Camaro ran a 8.07 w/ a parachute. On one run I lined up next to a trailer car on slicks, seen too many hit the wall. I didn't like the way it looked so I sat at the light and let him run. They didn't record my time on that one because I started over 10 seconds late.

The Dodge V-8 p/u runs a bike and a 14.3 S-10 w/ 4.3 V-6. He said I am out running the Impalas he has seen at No Problem, I saw a group of 3 one time. I feel certain one of the 3 would out run me, but I don't know.

A Cobra ran a 11.83 w/ pulley, exhuast, Nittos and Predator tune!

I put all my time slips in excel and record my runs on a microcasstte for analysis. The temp was 73* and 45%.

Good job and good fun. It appears we have the similar setup and times.

What was you speed at the end of the 13.9 run?

Oh yeah, I'm liking it. Nice runs and nice kill on a stang.

I forgot to mention the Mustang GT, after the run I beat him in parked in the Pitts and didn't run again for over an hour!

MPH 99.06 with some spin. Note for some reason spin usually results in a higher trap speed.

Mustangs are usually the best kills. Last time at the T&T here I had one snake through the lines to get to me. Similar results as yours, beat him all ways. My next pass, while waiting for the two wheelers turn, this lady with a real hot Camaro (7 sec 1/8 mile times) comes up to me and said " Nice one, I was rooting for you, and so weren't most of the rest of us." Nuff about that, I too have noticed not only better trap speed, but better times with some tirespin. Not a lot, but some. Anyone else?

Highly Unscientific Possibility:

Better speed/ET with some tire spin

Could it be that some spin gets the RPM's up more quickly and gets the engine into its power band sooner? Of course, too much spin will leave you at the starting line too long, and overcome any advantage that the higher RPM's might give you. But, is there a point where there is a "sweet spot" of just enough spin to get you into the power that might help?

OK, I've shown my ignorance on this subject. Going back to work.

Wow! That's great man!

- Head Reverse Flow Coolant Kit
Is that the thing where he takes out the freeze plugs and re-routes coolant?

Yes, my purpose in doing so was solely to improve cooling in a known problem area. In other words not a speed improving mod.

Sailsmen,
Great racing and great writing .... I felt like I was there and holding my breath to the line. Wow !!! Congrats on all the kills for the night. The trophy wall must be getting full by now.

Thanks, my reasons for writing about my track experience are primarily driven by;
1) avenge the bad rap a car magazine gave the MM as being slow
2) provide information to others that may help them run at the track
3) to encourage others to go to the track and write about their experiences which I really enjoy reading!

I have found my best times are when I power brake to 900 to 1,100 (depends on the track condition) and get very minor wheel spin.

Usually good for about 10 hot runs, then she will need a good long time to cool down or the preformance drops off 1-2 tenths. (The driver also needs a cool down. )

Ross I have thought about it a lot and I think your theory is correct.

A car that is spinning is generally not moving as fast as a car that is not spinning. Lets suppose We have 2 of the exact same vehicles with the same drivers, duplicate in every way.

They both hit it at the green. Car #1 spin is almost non-existant and is moving down the track quickly while the engine rpms are building as the speed builds.

Meanwhile car #2 spins as in the engine rpms are higher than the corresponding speed and is barely moving down the track.

The clock is ticking and car #1 is 3 car lengths ahead.

Now car #2 begins to get traction in that the speed begins to catch up to the rpm. Essentially car #2 has "started" late but at a slow roll with the engine in the rpm part of the engine that develops more power.

Now car #2 is able to accelerate faster for a higher trap speed but not enough to catch car #1 due to the late "start" of car #2.

One technique I tried at the track was to line up in the sticky part, look for the dark area's where other cars have previously run.

After a run where I spun alot one of the staff guided me into this area and I got good traction.

That is where it looks like the top fuel guys line up after the burnout. ;)

Wow, that's great news. I hope I can post similar numbers next week in the hills of Maryland. I will be up against not only one mustang, but a club of mustangs. :banana2:
