The headlines blared out that forty people were wounded by gunfire this weekend and one young girl killed in Chicago.

I'm asking how this level of volence is going to affect our venue. I don't know, will the Chicago MV team comment?

Look at it like this: if something happens, you just got a memorable moment in your life for free.

One of the problems with media coverage of this kind of crime is that it leads legitimate people to believe that they are in danger. For instance, when the press blares out "SHOOTINGS UP 37% !", they are implying that average, honest people have a 37% higher risk of getting shot.

This is false. But it does sell newspapers, and it does get you to watch the TV news.

The truth of it is, the majority of people who get shot are bad guys, who get shot by other bad guys, for bad-guy business and / or personal reasons. Sure, once in a while an innocent bystander or a kid gets hit, or somebody gets shot during a robbery, but it's not common - there just isn't this crazed pistolero running around shooting people he doesn't know, for no reason. For the most part, if you can manage to avoid being involved with criminals, or in criminal activity - especially narcotics - the odds of you getting shot drop off dramatically ;)

Thanks for the response, Devil Girl.

What I don't know is where in relation to our activities is this violence centered? Or is it throughout the city? Illinois is the only state that denies concealed carry from Louisiana, so I don't want to get tagged for a concealed pistol at a routine traffic stop. Also I read where the city of Chicago banned hand guns. The criminals have them for sure.

It's a concern. Zack assures me that since most of our membership is gay we are immune from attack. Whitey wants me to cherish the experience.
Somehow I'm not completely comforted.:D

As a Chicago resident you have nothing to worry about. Heck, the hotel isn't even in Chicago!

When I moved to where I am at there were teenager gangbangers out at 3am every night yelling and climbing all over things, now things have changed. It's actually a better area. Even when you are in a bad area, you will be fine. Do not show any signs of fear, do not look at anyone in the eye unless you are trying to get by someone (if at all) be respectful and they will leave you alone.

Trouble, doesn't just happen, most ask for it or do not know how to respond to it.

BTW, this is a very liberal city (sorry to bring politics into this) so the media LOVES to SAY how bad things are in attempt to change the public view on gun control sense we recently allowed carry and conceal. It's all bad guys shooting each other anyway. There aren't even investigations because no one talks in the towns the shootings are in. "Gang related. Ok. Tag him and bag him." It's not random shootings. Walk the walk and you can talk the talk. The media is so full of lies and blowing things out of proportion, it's not even worth listening to if you know the story because it hits the news or know of it.

You will be fine. West of Western street can be iffy, but you guys will be no where near that.

Sorry I will not be around for the party.

There are places you should avoid in Chicago, just as I'm sure there are in Louisiana. Common sense saves lives.

I love living in the city
I love living in the city

My house smells just like a zoo
It's chock full of s**t and puke
Cockroaches on the walls
Crabs crawlin' on my balls
Oh, well I'm so clean cut
I just wanna fu** some ****

I love living in the city
I love living in the city

Spent my whole life in the city
Where junk is king and the air smells shi**y
People puking everywhere
Piles of blood, scabs and hair

Bodies wasted in the street
People dying on the streets
But the suburban scumbags they don't care
They just get fat and dye their hair

I love living in the city
I love living in the city

I love living in the city
I love living in the city

I love living in the city

From my understanding, you can have one in your vehicle, as long as the clip/bullets, are on the other side. Not easily accessible to cap people! Well, that's how my buddy, who's owns a tow truck business, explained it to me.

I see this as a legitimate question but being a resident I would tell you you have very little to worry about. The hotel is in what we consider the southwest suburbs and there are virtually no worries around there. The trip on Thursday is in the heart of the city (what we call the loop as the elevated train "the EL" loops around the center of the city). Its a beautiful busy area with no worries.

Are there areas that are risky - sure but we will not be around any of them and as Dom said if you don't ask for problems you don't get them. I live just outside of one part of Chicago that is considered a high crime area - my town is the home of Earnest Hemingway and Frank Lloyd Wright, 100k houses next to million dollar houses all living peaceful together. Petty theft is all that really comes our way - and that is in any neighborhood. Much of Chicago is laid out this way

One thing they say about Chicago is it is the friendliest large city in the world - until you get behind the wheel of a car. And that is very true - people will give you the shirt off their back no matter what part of town they are from, just don't get in their way when they are driving. So my only warning is be prepared for jerks on the road, ignore them and enjoy a city with a ton of history, culture and a ton of diversity.

Thanks Sleepy03

By the way, Friday and Saturday's events are in areas us Chicagoan's consider another state as they are way out in what not too long ago was nothing but farmland. The Autobaun is way south west of Chicago, outside another large city (small compared to Chicago but large to many) Joliet. It is another old city with a population of 150,000 but the race track is outside the city in what is now a state of the art transportation hub.

Volo is way northwest of Chicago - again to me its farmland. A good hour to hour and a half from most parts of Chicago. Both can be beautiful drives depending on the routes you take. (no hills etc. just some cool old towns and nice back roads)

Thanks to the input of many Chicagoans in the know, any concerns should be minimised. I am closing the thread to prevent derailment. Question asked and answered.
