One of my next projects is to remove the exhaust pipe from the car and take it out in my yard and put it on some saw horses and grind all the rust off it. Then lightly coat it four or five times with some flat black high temp chassis spray paint.

I've never removed an exhaust before but from looking underneath the car and reading my shop book it doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it.

Any one got any pointers or am I just being foolish think I can do this by myself and get it back on...

As always any help is much appreciated:help:

if its stock you will either have to remove the differential or cut it off.

The exhaust is stainless so why paint it? it's not high grade stainless so it discolors quickly

This is posted in the 63-65, 69-70 Classic Marauders forum.

If the OP is talking about an older MM then the exhaust system is probably made of steel.

If so, I wouldn't paint it. Get a new SS system installed.

Matt, unless I'm missing something I think you are wasting your time. Don't worry about this rust.

yeah I guess you guys are right, got under the car today and there is no way I can get the pipes off any way without taking off the exhaust manifold and/or cutting them and then welding them back together. Guess I'm being a little stupid just really getting into working on this car.

Got a quote today on the vinyl that is suppose to be the same as the original. They want 70 dollars a yard for the seat vinyl. I didn't even ask how much per yard for the headliner vinyl but did get a quote from a guy who has a shop near here and wants 400 to install the headliner and cant really give me a quote on the seat until he see's it.

He also told me he can get me the same vinyl probably cheaper or the same price and I am being an idiot shopping for this stuff out of state. I've heard his shop does really good work but aren't cheap.

Talked to another guy today who tells me he can do the seats and headliner and anything else also. The mechanic up the street from my house recommended him.

Problem is he doesn't have employees or a shop or business or anything. Just a guy. But swears he does good work and can save me money. I think they have all realized I don't know what the hell I'm doing and are trying to get my money.

I think I may have to take a step back for while and really think about what Im going to do before I spend any more money because this **** is getting expensive. For materials and labor the one seat and headliner installed is looking like its gonna be between 1500 and 2000 grand.

Wasn't really expecting it to be that much. Well at any rate, appreciate the advice and help guys, I really do. Its ashame that I trust the people on this site whom Ive never met more than these people I'm meeting recently to get info on this work I want done.

Anyways I'm sure you guys are about sick of reading all this crap by now so I'll say good night and wish you all well. Be back in touch later, thanks again.

Ask the shops if they can provide any references... people that have had work done. Contact them and ask to see the work, ask if they were satisfied, etc.

You could look on google or bing and see if you can find any comments or reviews on the shops. Sometimes though reviews are done by shop owners themselves though. So watch for that. You could also check out that angieslist.com too but idk if you have to pay to see reviews on there. I have heard it's pretty good though

Now that sounds like a great plan. Patience is your friend.

Matt, you may have caught this from other comments, but all steel exhaust systems will rust if you run the engine. It's just part of the heating/cooling process of operation. The only way to get away from it is by using stainless steel, like an '03-4 Marauder does. Run your car until the exhaust is junk. Then, if you still think it's an issue, replace it with stainless. It is an option.

Currently my car is stored in a garage that is not climate controlled and also has a washer and dryer in it that are used regularly.

To add to that I live in the deep south and it is very humid down here, especially this time of year. Any one have any cost effective ideas on how to protect the car from further moisture damage until I have the money to get it painted and get all new weather stripping for it, etc, etc.

It also seems like the trim on the outside of the car is getting worse in terms of light rust pitting on it just from sitting in the garage. Its never out in the rain. Any ideas or advice would be very appreciated.

Oh and kirk, I found the original light blue color headliner material that was in the car when I got it with all the little m's on it. I gave these people the trim code off the door and samples and they showed me what all the original vinyl in that car looked like new.

Its amazing how different the color looks from then to now due to aging and sun fading or darkening, etc.

The material new looks outstanding. Went ahead and ordered a pre-made headliner and it should be here in a couple weeks. Cost me 375, hope that was a fair price but pretty sure it was based on what the other two places quoted me and wanted to make it out of material they already had that wasn't that, not even close.

One guy even told me the vinyl in my car can't be found anymore anywhere because it is so old, swore to it.

http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ For the upholstry material. If they don't have it, it is most likely not being made. Also they can do the embossing of logos or lines in the vynil like original (extra cost of course).

Vintage upholstry is not cheap (anymore). Any good shop or person should be happy to provide samples of thier finished work if they are proud of it. If the original upholstry is there enough to get the idea of how the seats were put together, any good craftsman should be able to duplicate it. Some uphosltry guys don't like to do restorations because if they do it right, it looks like the factory. They want to express their creativity and give you a custom job. Those shops won't work if you want original.

Cheap with vintage car clubs in your area, they will know who does original type work.

Yeah these people I'm considering have already schooled me on original versus a cheaper after market. Original will have a date stamped on the back and is a higher quality.

That's what I'm going with but its going to cost like 60 or 65 a yard and it takes about 4 to 4 1/2 yards to do the front seat in my car. Plus they say they will add some kind of burlap under lay or something, don't really know anything about upholstery.

And yes, they are definitely not cheap
