View Full Version : Rear Spoiler Install

I bought a OEM rear spoiler, and had it painted, but the body shop that painted it, didn't want to install it. The service manager said, that he didn't feel comfortable with his body man putting it on. Said he was shaky. I appreciated his honesty, and figured I'd just do it myself. So, I look at the directions, feel pretty confident I can do it, until I read that they want me to use a 1' drill saw, inside the trunk:shake: Now I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but I've never used a drill saw before, so I'm a lil gun shy, about doing it. So I go to Roesch Ford body shop, to see if they would do it, and how much. Well, the guy told me $400! WHAT? Are you kidding me? I asked if he got high on his lunch break, because there's no way I'm gonna pay you $400, for 8 holes! Has anyone put one of these on before? Am I over thinking this drill saw thing? Any advice, or anybody in Illinois know a shop, that wont charge an arm, an a leg?

That's nuts, Ford dealership body shop manager that I know quoted me "cash price" of $150 to paint and install.

I say do it yourself. I did mine, you can definitely do it! Just give yourself plenty of time and be patient.

I read where you said that! Which was why I started laughing at the guy, when he said $400. Lets see, I paid $200 for the spoiler, and $150 for paint. If I paid this guy, that would be $750! I have no problem drilling all the holes, and then have someone else do the drill saw. I just have a bad feeling, that I'd go through to the other side:eek:

I did mine with no template. Easy job, just measuring..

The inside holes are just so you can get to the nuts. Pilot drill a 1/4" bit from the marks on the outside all the way thru to the inside. Open up the outside holes with a step bit to desired size. Put pilot bit from hole saw thru the inside hole and hole saw the inside with a 1" bit.

I think I might try to tackle it this weekend. Maybe I should just pay you :2thumbs:

Hole saws are easy stuff man, i will say to wear eye protection while doing it. I use them at work to drill a hole into the side of pipes, and metal shavings will go flying, and they will be a little hot too.

I have installed 4 spoilers for people...it really is easy. Just drill a pilot hole first and don't put all your weight behind the hole saw and you'll be fine.

^^^ exactly?? I've done both mine that way.

Only thing I would add is to put large blanket inside the trunk when drilling to catch the metal filings..trust me it will make cleanup much easier and quicker. Those filings are really a b!tch to get out of the trunk carpeting. They stick to it like Velcro.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll grow a set, and do it this weekend. I'll post pics when I get it done. Now, here's one more question. I have all the time in the world to do this, but you think it can be done in an hour? I don't see why I wouldn't be able to. Maybe 2 tops? I'm just trying to figure out $400. Isn't shop time, like $54 an hour? The last thing I said to the guy was, "$400, for an hours worth of work, tops!" That's when he got a lil upset w me. He said, "An hour! Ok, thanks, have a nice day." IT'S PERSONAL NOW! I don't want to be proven wrong! I don't take myself, that seriously.

Maybe an hour for including taking out all the tools getting everything ready and cleaning everything up..it really does not take too long. That's the problem with body shops and a lot of other shops as well..they want to hit a grand slam on every job :shake:

they want to hit a grand slam on every job :shake:Like the plumber who wanted to charge me $1000 to run 30' of 1" copper and connect it to a water meter. When I questioned that, he asked me if I knew how much a roll of solder cost nowadays...I asked him if he was going to use a whole roll on this one job. Dick.

Have black touch-up paint to hit the holes after drilling to seal the bare metal.

Does it have to be black, since my MM is Silver? Or the color doesn't matter, as long as there isn't exposed metal to rust? Isn't there some kind of sealer I can put on? I know from the factory, they use something, kinda sticky.

It doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of hands when lining it up for the proper angle against the trunk lid. Not an absolute requirement, but makes it much easier to fit and install.

I was thinking that also. Since you have to put the screws through the underside of the trunk. So someone holding the spoiler, while I stick the screws through.

The underside should have a strip of double sided tape about 1/4" wide running all the way around it. This is what actually holds the spoiler on and keeps water out from behind it, the bolts seem to just keep it from falling off. The bolts are just snugged down, not super tight or it will deform the spolier.

I have found that I peel the ends of the tape back about 3" on each secton. Then when the spolier is in place and the bolts started I pull the rest of the double sided tape cover off, stick the spolier and tighten the bolts.

Yeah, they say to do that in the directions, but I'm wondering on the lining up of the spoiler holes, with the holes on the trunk, with it already sticking to the trunk. While sticking screws through a 1' hole, through the trunk, into the spoiler. It seems like installation would be easier with threaded studs, and nuts. I'm possibly looking into trying my route.

I did make some progress today on installation. This was the last piece I needed. Now I just have to find time to do it!

I bought 4 allen head bolts from Ace. Put the washers on stick it on the end of an allen wrench and guide them in. Like it was said already you just have to snug them up so an allen wrench is more than enough. I also put a dab of silicon on the washers to seal out any water that may have found its way in.

I thought the same thing. In the directions it says to use a 5/16 drill. Well, I only brought a 1/8, n a 1/4 home with me. The screws fit with the 1/4, but if I would've used a 5/16, I could've centered it better, n had more room to play with.

I have a 1987 Monte Carlo SS that of course came with the factory spoiler, they had small holes and threaded studs on them, on the inside of the trunk where the large holes were they had silver colored plastic covers. they simply put a glob of that rubber stuff that stays sticky forever on each hole to keep the water out. So that would be a good way to go.
I recently bought a 2009 black CVPI and was going to put a spoiler on it, I noticed the ones on eBay are ABS plastic and the OEM (super expensive) are fiberglass.
Has anyone had good luck with the ABS ones? I suppose it would have to be painted with plastic paint.
