View Full Version : Trans Question - Slipping in 2nd Gear Only
tbone

My trans is having issues again. The 1-2 shift has been soft since I supercharged it. Now it is slipping in 2nd gear only, 1st gear is perfectly fine, so I think the 1-2 clutch packs are ok. I installed a hardened stub shaft after 2 previous ones broke. 1st gear, 3rd, OD, lockup all work fine.
Hopefully it is something simple.....like the 1-2 accumulator servo. I'm considering splurging for a Monster Racing Trans and parting out this transmission.
Get a core and have it built by DRC up in the nothwest suburbs.
Dominick hasnt been able to break his in 100+K miles.
I have one in the turbo car.
How you came up with Monster is beyond me. The next person I'd use is Freddy Brown out of New York.

I read some reviews on Monster and they are less than stellar. Hmmmm.....I hate transmissions and everyone who works on them.
DRC will do it right the first time. Trust me

The trans is officially f***ed again. Too much power for it to handle. I have a guy here in town that knows his stuff and so does his mechanic. They repaired my differential for me. They have done a LOT of high performance trans work. PERFORMANCE transmissions are their specialty. I decided it's a bad idea to buy a trans from far away, have it break and then have the finger pointing start. He said he will give me a 1 year unconditional warranty on the whole shebang. But it aint gonna be cheap. Output shaft, stub shaft, drums etc. will be top shelf hardened, pump machined to flow more juice, premium clutches, new high quality torque converter, and more. He promised it will be bullettproof. I did not know them when I hired the first buffoon, but I wish I did. Oh well, it's only money.......:bigcry:

Tom, listen to Zack. I picked that trans up for him and met them / toured the shop. They are serious about power. Have you not witnessed turbo blue?? Hell, the Dom comment alone should tell you something..

Tom Tom Tom......
Would you just listen to me on this?
Take it to DRC. PLEASE.
It will be the last transmission you buy. Plenty of guys on thechicagogarage use his transmissions too. No problems whatsoever.
Please let them do it. It cost me $1100 for the whole Kit-n-Kaboodle. I brought them the trans though.

Tom, let me give it to you straight:
The last guy who did your trans F'ed it up.
There are countless members driving around with 450rwhp on a stock 4R70W with a J-Mod or increased line pressure...for thousands and thousands of miles with no problems.
You got burned. Don't make the same mistake again.

I just had Blackstone Lab test my trans fluid and also dropped the pan finding no debris;
No issues to report for the transmission. Metals really haven't changed all that much since the last sample. Iron went up a tad, copper decreased a bit, but these readings are just fine after 9,755 miles on the oil. We're not finding any excessive solids in the oil (see insolubles at a trace level), and the viscosity
was good for Mercon V. Put another 2,000 miles on this oil and check back. Keep up the good work!
Motorcraft Fluids. 82K miles and 71 1/4 passes w/ 542RWHP 1.667 7.360@92.70, 11.542@121.19.
But when mine does goes out I will not be surprised due to use that's on it.
I fail to see the reasoning for posting your transmission fluid analysis in this thread.

Oh I know he ****ed it it all up. No secret on that one.
I told the mechanic today that there are plenty of guys that have my setup and run stock transmissions without issues. I don't think he believed me.
Ok, I will take your advice Zack. I will call them on Monday and have Eric's tow guy take it down there on Tuesday, my day off. Maybe you could let your buddies there know that you referred me.

The post was for the benefit of the one who started the thread. To let him know 1) it is possible to get 82K+ miles and 71 1/4 passes w/ 542RWHP on the trans
2) a Lab on the fluid and inspection of dropping the pan shows no problems
3) having spent a lot of time and money on the Marauder to not become discouraged, that he can get a lot of enjoyable use out of it.

You threw your warranty out the window when you S/C'ed it! Doesn't it feel good? I'm one of the few that wouldn't hesitate stripping/cutting up a brand new car and prepping it for a better life of speed and domination..
Not much out there has warranties for racing. Hell, you don't even have insurance once you enter the water box..

Autozone warranties their house brands of alternators and water pumps. Doesn't mean I'll be a happy camper when I change it every eight months.
Seriously, the guy you found might be excellent! But after the experience you've had, I would only take sound advice from personal experiences. Go there and just talk with them in person. It's like a two guy shop, the way I like my stuff handled. My head guys are the same, four guys local that no one knows, not really advertised, but kept small and turns out awesome work at average prices. I have to get a feel for who does my work before I commit.

WTF is so unusual about expecting a warranty for a transmission rebuild? Our supercharged motors aren't all THAT exotic or powerful.
Seriously. I don't get it.
4k for a transmission? Lol

At 4k anyone can afford to give you a warranty ,and still be ahead of the game if it has to be rebuilt under the so called warranty! That's way high!

08-10-2014, 02:40 PM
back in 2011 when I had my trans rebuilt the first time it was only 1100 and came with a 3 year warranty, but that was back before the eaton swap and gears...
whatever shop is doing the work is ripping you off, you can get a bulletproof trans off the internet for about 1500 less, plus a warranty
To expect a warranty on a trans behind a supercharger is like expecting a warranty from the guy who sold you your eaton.
Get with the program brah.
You need bucks to play this game, not a piece of paper that says you can play play play break then expect them to foot the bill.

Agreed.... warranty on a trans in a modified car... might as well pay $1300 3 times versus shelling out $4k for the guy to tell you something isn't covered or they go out of business.

4k for a transmission? Lol
It would be the very best of everything in a BULLETTPROFF RACING TRANS including the torque converter and labor. And a 1 year warranty. He offered it because he specializes in high performance transmissions and knows what he is doing. I also spoke at length with his mechanic about a year ago and he knew all about the 4r70w's. Best of all they communicate well and are happy to include you in the process.
I know of at least one member here that spent $1400 on his TC alone. A standard rebuild and install is roughly $2000. So $1-$2000 for all the best hardened parts, premium clutches, custom machined pump for extra flow, misc parts and TC isn't that bad.
Go back and read what I was said I was getting. I'll talk to your guy tomorrow. We will see what happens.
Good luck Tom. You have had bad luck or dis-satisfaction with every vendor in your journey.
Hope it works out for you

Not every vendor Zack. Far from it. And I have dealt with a LOT of them. And everything turned out great in the end. I didn't win that trophy because my car is a POS with crumby craftsmanship.
Problems:
Tuner
Transmission guy
Painter
Broken washer on pulley hub
I appreciate your advice, but it seems like you get mad and sarcastic if what you advise is not taken without question. I used your tuner you so highly recommended and between me and Bob, I would say he isn't that great. I said I will look into your guy and I will. I simply don't like the no warranty issue. I really do appreciate the reference to a good trans builder.

Bottom line if you take your junk to a knowledgeable and reputable rebuilder you don't need a warranty.
You have been burned so many times you have set unrealistic expectations on this.
My junk is still broke and I've had a giant dose of burnage even from a member and a previous vendor here on this site .
Hopefully the story gets better soon!

I paid $420 to have Trans pulled... New intermediate shaft along with new 2nd gear clutches...
I elected for the stock intermediate shaft only because I would rater break that again than destroy the drum or other hard parts. Only reason mine failed was my fault completely, I let it shift to 4th at WOT at ~130mph. Other than that the Trans had 15,000 miles on it... 100+ passes at the strip between myself and previous owner (friend). All said and done the r&r along with build originally was $2250. Car made 427tq to the wheels for 5+ years without failure.
I'd entertain the recommendations of Bob and Zack as well. I wish you best of luck!
Everyone is a professional Trans builder just like tuner claims to be an expert...

The guy offered me a 1 year warranty when I asked for it. What's unrealistic about that? I asked for it, he said he doesn't normally do that, but since I don't race every weekend and because I got screwed with the other guy, he said ok. So I won. The trans will be the best, and it will be $3000 or less per our latest agreement, including a custom made to order torque converter. Double win.

They got the trans apart. My previous trans moron stripped 2 of the bolts that hold the pump on, left so much clearance in the clutch pack that you could fit another clutch in there, didn't bother to torque down the valve body, didn't install the torque converter properly and more. Everything is fried, including the pump, torque converter and other parts. Astounded it held together at all.
The trans shop I hired is amazing. 2 really knowledgeable guys that truly care about their work and know what they are doing. I'm in good hands this time.

Got the car back. Everything works great! Custom made billett 3000 converter, master O/H kit with race clutches, shift kit, AOD bushing kit, Superior OD super servo, Raybestos reverse and OD bands, Superior tough plate.
Trans is built and set up for max fluid pressure, so was my tune, so had to back it off to -25% pressure on the shifts to operate correctly. Waiting for tuner to adjust pressure so 0% on the tuner is stock pressure and I can adjust from there, up or down.
Have an official certificate in hand with 1 year unconditional warranty, parts and labor. Jason at Crystal Lake Transmissions is awesome.
Final cost $2150 plus $1000 for torque converter guaranteed to handle up to 700 hp. Unkown to me my old converter was only good for maybe 300 hp, according to the TC guy that tore it down for inspection. Oopsy.....misled by Roadruner.
