My rear brakes went metal to metal...didn't think much of it. I replaced the rotors and pads. The calipers seemed OK although the pistons were a little tight going back in...again, didn't think much of it. Drove home 15 miles and heard dragging/scraping at lower speeds. Got home and look at the rear rotors. Left rotor looked "normal", right rotor was blue and purple. Today I got two new rear calipers, I put them on. Pedal feels good, no dragging when I'm driving. I get home and check the rotors. Left rotor is " warm" right rotor is "HOT". not smoking, but very hot. I'm thinking maybe the right rear hose is collapsed? I am going to pick up two rear hoses tomorrow, unless you guys think it's something else?

Did you do/change e-brake shoes? If they are not adjusted right then they rub and cause heat. Excessive heat

No, I didn't. I checked the drum part of the rotor, no contact marks.

maybe that problem caliper is sticking after you press the brakes and doesn't come back off the rotor all the way causing it to rub.....
never mind you already changed the calipers....

And I think that's still the problem. Which is why I think its a collapsed hose. Its not allowing the fluid to retract, causing the piston to "stick"?

Get the braided SS lines from TCE.

I would love to, but its my daily driver and I need it fixed by tonight. I've been using my girlfriends car yesterday and today. She needs it tomorrow. Do you think the brake hoses are the culprit?

I once had a Taurus that had that exact problem...was a bad hose.

If you've checked everything else... yes.

Thanks guys. I'll grab two hoses. They're cheap enough

A fellow member suggested to me that I should update the status of my car with you guys.
So I replaced the rear pads and rotors, on the initial test drive the passenger rotor got smoked. I replaced both calipers and hoses. That fixed the issue of the rotor heating up, however I still heard a light "scuffing" noise from the rear brakes. While my car was in the shop I decided to change my rear diff fluid. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/01/13ad0616b5554afbd4238c2ee8696b 7f.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/01/5864c3d411396fab07011ce72ed749 5a.jpg
Lots of metal shavings and almost every spider gear is chipped. (No noise coming from rear tho) This is causing in and out play of the rear wheels making the rotor scuff the pads. So I ordered 410s and install kit. I will be ordering a ford racing 31 spline LSD (when it comes off backorder) and 31 spline Moser axles.

Completely normal for the spiders. Seen plenty of them trashed but quiet.

That aint normal.
Unfortunately trashed spider gears are pretty normal

I'm glad he posted photos of this condition. I didn't know that this could be a symptom of slight brake noise even after all of the other items were replaced. Good info to consider.

Why is this normal Bob??
Mine were fine with no indication of wear at 177K miles so we used 'em.....now at almost 255K miles I'm concerned!!:(
Does doing BURNOUTS kill 'em??

Spiders are used when one wheel is spinning faster then the other, such as around turns. They can either be quiet, or not when they chip up. Not too bad of a job, as long as you know what your doing and have bob's phone number handy;)

To answer your question on normal wear I am basing it on what has come through my garage and the local speedshop owner's experience combined. Together we have probably seen 75% of the cars we've had in have horrible spiders. No explanation as some of these cars were not driven hard, others with perfect gears that have been thrashed repeatedly over the years? Design tolerances?
Obviously the farther down your clutch packs wear the spring exerts more outward pressures on the side gears which in turn creates more slack between the sides and the upper/lowers.
Couldn't tell you? Just seen more bad than I have good, that's all.

Could be variations of the heat treat instead of how the parts are being used. When the steel is hardened too hard, it tends to fracture more. One way to think of this: keeping steel below 55Rc keeps it's toughness, over that amount, it is more like glass.

If the axle has in/out play, I would check that the c-clip groove is not worn.
