I suspect that the Autobahn is not as much fun to drive as it was back in the mid-70s and 80s. Traffic congestion has probably resulted in downgraded speeds between Kaiserslautern and Viernheim Drei Eck, from Frankfurt to Heidelberg and from Heidelberg to Heilbronn and Stuttgart. I saw the difference in traffic volume between '75 and when I returned again in '86. I equated the growth in volume to what happened in the USA during the 50s and the 60s. Germany just seemed to be about 20-25 years behind us. I am sure there a still place on the Autobahn where you can let it hang out .... e.g. north of Geissen or south of Stuttgart. The Wurzburg/Nuremburg corridor is probably now heavily travelled.
Just remember that no matter how fast you think you are, there is ALWAYS someone faster over there. I learned this lesson between Munich and Freilassing in 1976 while travelling above 120 MPH and was passed like I was standing still ..... whatever it was passed me so fast that I couldn't identify it.
