View Full Version : Help with an Alternator question please

My Marauder is at the dealers with a dead alternator, they can put on an aftermarket alternator immediately but it will not have the special pulley that allows the alternator to shutdown at wide open throttle or I can wait a week to 10 days for the Marauder specific alternator.
I am told that I will only miss out on a bit of horsepower as the alternator will not shut off at WOT if I go this way, all else should be good.
Is it a bad choice to go with this or should I park the car and wait for the correct alternator, I really need the car but don't want to make a bad decision.
Also it has a Lidio tune, will that have any effect on this situation?
Not sure what to do.
The computer shuts the alternator off, not the pulley..
LMAO
And FYI they can swap your old pulley onto the new alternator if they have the correct socket.

If I am ever in Indiana I will be buying you breakfast/lunch/supper you are always very helpful and surprisingly quick to answer my questions.
I would never go to the dealer but believe it or not they were changing the LCM under extended warranty coverage and I am told the wrong part was shipped so they put the dash back in the car gave me the car back and it died on the way home.
After a long discussion they told me not there fault they could not have broken the alternator, so I need a new one.
I suspect they ran the battery down and the alternator surged and was already weak. A complete comedy of errors and I just want the damn car back.
Am I ok with this aftermarket alternator they speak of?
As Zach mentioned it is the computer that shuts off the alternator to get max power at WOT. The clutch pulley is to prevent belt squawk and wear when it shifts into the next gear at WOT. The overrunning clutch allows the mass of the alternator to decelerate slowly down to the belt speed. Rather than attempting to slow it too quickly and causing the belt to slip.

There is no need to take out the dash to replace the LCM. At most it's a 15 minute job.
As long as the alternator is charging you should be OK.

I may be wrong about the dash as I did not see the car apart, however I was sure the customer service rep said it was out? Anyways they asked for the car for the day because it was a big job so I am concerned they do not know what they are doing, they also mentioned the pulley issue and did not think to switch pulleys.
Not sure if the service manager is clueless or the mechanic.
I guess I am still not sure if I am doing the wrong thing by allowing them to put on the aftermarket pulley?

The pulley most likely came on the alternator. It won't do any harm to the engine.
You can always have your alternator rebuilt locally Usually same day service around $75

Thanks Zac, I was wondering about rebuilding the existing alternator which Is what I should have done in the first place.
Once they have the car trapped inside my options become limited so at the very least I will ask for the old alternator back.

Giving them all the credit I can muster, the FSM does call for taking the accelerator pedal out, but if you've ever done even ONE LCM, you learn that is completely unnecessary. Even if they did that, the job wouldn't take more than a half hour or so.

To answer your question, the aftermarket alt will work fine.
Ask or the old alt back, pay them the core charge if necessary & then have it rebuilt to keep as a spare or sell.

It can take awhile to wrestle the old LCM out and the new LCM in, but you don't need to take out the dash

It's a less than 15 minute job. Don't have to remove the dash, don't have to do anything with the pedals. Just remove 2 screws and 3 connectors.

If the foglight relay in the LCM is bad both foglights won't work. PM me with you address and I'll send another ballast. There ould also be a problem witht he ground in the harness to the foglight harness. I've seen alot of corrosion in some of them.

Drivers side ballasts seem to fail at a high rate due to lack of fender well. Make sure to add additional weather proofing and make sure the harness connectors are pointed down as to prevent water intrusion and the ballast is mounted as far up as you can out of the way..
I agree with FBM, both fogs would be out if you had a failure in the LCM.
Can always swap ballast / bulbs to isolate the issue. Check the connector with a multi meter for proper ground and voltage.
OP. The dealer will most likely be clueless about how to change the pulley, I learned the hard way about this. However you may have luck at a VW / Audi dealer for the tool, a lot of their products shared the clutched pulley.

Your options are never limited. You just need to know who high up to bark at.

Don't mean to hijack thread, but a quick question.
Did the JMOD on my 2003 Grand Marquis and am getting the belt slipping/squawk at WOT. I still have the OEM clutch pulley from my Marauder, could I have that installed on the Grand Marquis alternator and avoid the belt slipping?
If so, would I need to go with a different belt size?

I believe the pulleys are same diameter (if not damn close), shouldn't be an issue for you to do the swap.
