i have a MM that has 40.000 original miles on her.. when i start it up when it is 100% cold engine , i get a puff of oil out the exhaust ( Blue Smoke oil ) it does not burn oil other wise while driving or , after being warmed up , or eat up oil and having to replace oil and checking all the time on the dip stick..

I heard of old muscle car of the time ,maybe not having a oil vale seal and puffing a little oil when start up and just being a high performance motor , i know after cold start up , part expand as they warm , and tolerences tighten . and my M.M. has lived a lot of storage life in it,s year,s is there some thing to this 4.6 DOHC motor of the 03-04 period i don,t know about?? puffing a little oil on a cold start up , i know it was a high performance motor , but i kinda thought that stuff went away with the muscle car,s era ,and this is a modren motor 4.6 DOCH. 03-04.

Most of us have the same thing.

Motor has gone bad. I will buy it from you. Send me a email with price. If you don't want to sell it to me replace idle air control valve. Also when you start & turn off motor always let it run for at least three to five min. before turning off.

The puffing on start-up is very common...although some never do it. Don't sweat it unless it suddenly gets much worse.

Also, don't start the engine just to "run it a little" or to "circulate the oil". If you start it, take it out and drive it until it gets to operating temp, otherwise don't run it at all. The Blackbird sits under cover all winter without being started and it's fine every spring.

common. Ford called it a "normal characteristic" of the engine back in the day of warranty complaints. ;)

Nothing to worry about.....nature of the beast! 2003-04 Mach1 does the same.
Worry when it doesn't smoke!!! LOL

Gotta Love It!

Many other cars do this as well. CTS Vs, Corvettes, not just our cars.

I put a half a bottle of bardahl no smoke in with my yearly 5w oil change. I only put on 3 or 4,000 miles per year.

The last 3 years i waited to see if it puffed a cloud or just a bit after the oil change before adding the no smoke. Every time it put out big puffs, add the half bottle {it recommends the full bottle for v8's} and i get no smoke or just a bit which i don't mind.

That is my experience, works for me.

I have a 2003 with 62k that give some blue smoke on start up. I just bought the car a week ago, and the dealer said they will buy it back. It only happens when the car is cold. What should I do?

Sell it to me

The ceremonial $8.00 opening bid

Don't worry about bro. They probably have a buyer with more $$$$ lined up to get it. Normal characteristic.

My '04 did it on and off for 10 years.......start yours on a cool morning and turn it off after 15-30 seconds....restart in an hour and you'll swear you're sprayin' for Skeeters!!

Don't worry about it.....like Zack says it's NORMAL!!;)

A little bit of paranoia I sense.

Just saying, new BMWs smoke more than any other car I've seen.

Well call me abnormal then, 103,000 miles no smoke at startup, I have had other vehicles that did and have no concerns about it.

No smoke on start here either. My MM Used to do it, used Auto-Rx to clean and condition the seals. This worked for a year or two.

Why does it smoke on start?? Valve seals dry out and shrink letting the oil in the heads (after you shut it off) drip into the cylinders. The common 4v smoke on start you see is this oil burning.

Mobile 1 5w-30 high mileage fully synthetic oil has additives to recondition engine seals etc and works well for the smoke on start issue. Try it, got 5w-30 M1 full synth, high mileage.

Or you could get new valve seals too - ($ and hard)
