Doing the JMOD on my 2003 Grand Marquis today and noticed these bolts on the back of the transmission...
One is tightened and the other isn't. Also noticed there was no plug in the pan so I'm assuming the trans was removed at some point possibly?
Bought the car in December 2013 with 72,000 miles on it odometer is now at 81,000.
There's some kind of dust shield that is loose on this one side and I was wondering if anyone can let me know what this bolt is connecting and a torque spec?
Also, I've noticed the magnet in the pan has minimal amounts of debris on it, but should I wipe it clean before reassembly or just leave it?
It feels like there is some kind of grease on it and I don't want to disturb the function in any way.

The loose bolt is just the torque converter cover, no need to crank it really tight.
Just clean off the magnet, it looks like the fluid was changed recently from the amount of filings on it.

Yes to this.

 Well Marauderers I will take advantage of this thread to post my doubts too about the famous "J Mod" is about the springs. I see in the intructional video of the J Mod that two springs we're removen and not put it back in, ¿ why ? is that part of the J Mod ? what is the function of those springs ? can the transmission perform or function without those springs properly ? thanks to read Mangs. :type:

I believe the springs help soften the shifts thus put more wear on the clutches.
If I'm wrong I'll be corrected in

Your referring to the removal of the 1-2 shift accumulator spring, and the 2-3 shift accumulator lower spring. Yes, the transmission will operate just fine without the presence of these springs.
I suggest not removing the springs. Spring removal makes the shifts much stiffer during all aspects of driving. So while your WOT 1-2 shift might chirp your tires, your casual drive to work in the morning 1-2 shift is going to make you spill your coffee.
Theres allot of talk over on CVN about not removing the springs or replacing the springs with a softer spring for a more reasonable transmission operation.
If all your doing is 1/4 mile runs, by all means remove the springs, but it was even scary during my road coarse driving where I had to mind my throttle going through corners as a downshift would most certainly initiate a sideways momentum.
I would highly recommend looking into Sonnax replacement parts for various valves and other control components. Sonnax offers improved design valves for the valve body which can better control shift charateristics. I would highly suggest using the Sonnax OD servo pin, as the traditional JMOD does very little to improve OD shifts. Not only with the Sonnax pin increase OD pressures, it also comes with a washer to preload the servo spring to increase shift speed further, all of which will contribute to reduced OD band wear.
I initially did a traditional JMOD to my 03 Vic, and while I was greatly satisfied with the awesome WOT and aggressive driving shifts, the casual driving and driving with passengers was too ridiculous. I then did my own setup on the Marauder, using five or six sonnax valve body replacement valves, JMOD separator plate holes, Sonnax OD servo piston and discontinued Ford softer OD servo spring, and finally softer 1-2/2-3 accumulator springs, at the same time I also reinstalled the OE springs into the Vic. The Vic became much better, not ridiculously aggressive but still quick and firm. The marauder shifted pretty well, the 3-4 4-3 shifts are perfect, but 1-2 2-3 still too aggressive. My plan now is to reinstall the OE accumulator springs and redo the separator plate with more aggressive hole sizing on upshifts.

Removed the 1-2 & 2-3 springs on my last marquis (2004) a few years ago and also this one today. Seems to just grab the gears better, haven't noticed much other then that. Neither cars were/are tuned though. Was your Vic tuned at all?

I ran the vic both with and without an aggressive transmission tune.

You can also soften the shifts in your tune, if equipped. Just dial it down to 0% between shifts

Tune ??? do I have to make a "tune" to the Panther after to make the J Mod ???

I am doing this in the coming weeks because after the swap the 1-2 shift is a little too lazy for my liking. However, I dont want it spilling my coffee on they way to work either. Im thinking I am going to leave the springs............... or am I??????

No. You don't have to do anything after doing the Jmod other than smile a lot.

I drilled the holes & pulled the springs. Normal driving is not much different than stock. Have to crack throttle over 25% to start feeling the mod. Of course, then its ALL win!

New gaskets or re-use old? (I think I know the answer) LOL

New gaskets Bubs. Usually in stock at Ford for like $2.00 each. I never could understand why so cheap, but chose not to question..

It's all done, shifts are nice and tightened up and reverse engages much faster. Took ten quarts to fill it back up, didn't drain the torque convertor.

Hi stryker, sorry for being unclear. No, you don't need a tune for a JMOD. what I meant was that you can change the parameters of the shifting if it's too harsh with a tuner.

I knew the answer. I was going to tear the car apart today but will order gaskets Tuesday instead. Instead of rushing into it I worked on tagalong's car today. Ol' Girl received newer plugs, belt and PCV out of my blue....... gotta recycle!
Jmod next week.

Jmod info from full thread: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=82460:
I ordered a Racing HP 4R70W Super Tuf seperator plate. It is thicker to prevent the cracking problem from being hammered by 1-2 actuator piston.
Cost:
$24 for separator plate (info below)
$4 for gasket 1 (from Nicco, my friendly local Ford parts dude)
$3 for gasket 2 (from Nicco, my friendly local Ford parts dude)
Filter Kit
10 qts ATF
This is a must do for performance car lovers and one of the cheapest mods!

BTW... Ford recommends 75w/140 oil for the rear.

Word of advise. Put teflon tape on the load studs before installing, and don't torque them down. They need to just hit the caps.
