View Full Version : Little Whine from the Transmission

I just recently noticed a little "whine" (in idle, first and second gear, mostly) from my transmission. So, today, while at a light, I put it in neutral and revved it up a little and the noise went away, but came back when I put it in gear again. I can't really hear in third or fourth. Maybe the front pump?
Fluid looks clean and has no smell (just had it flushed at the local Ford dealer in May, about ~4000 miles ago).
BTW, the trans shifts and seems to work just as it always has. No issues there.

Did you flush the trans and not change the filter or did the entire service? When my trans whined after 2k miles after a flush, we dropped the pan, changed the filter and fluid and the whine went away.
Its been fine for the last 4 years.

You know, I don't know. lol. I have to go to the dealer next week to get some work done on the Mustang. I will take the receipt over with me and ask them what that "flush" service was supposed to include. Meanwhile, I won't drive it until I find out.

Probably didn't include a filter change.

Restricted filter - 1st thing to check.
Don't drive like you said, till you change the filter. Can cause pump to burn up & then BIG $$$ to repair.
Even if they changed the filter with the flush, it's dirt cheap insurance to change it again & prevent burning something up. If the flush loosened something up that then washed in to the new filter and is now causing a restriction = change now and all good or ignore & be sorry in a few weeks.
Just my :twocents:.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies! Is there a special filter & fluid to use for the 2004 Marauder?

Personal preference.
I always use the Wix filter vs. cheapy house brand because I get OC on that stuff.
If you aren't running synthetic, a cheapy filter with what ever brand Mercon V is on sale is better than running around with a restricted filter.

If you are doing yourself, reuse the factory pan gasket (if still in place). It is made to reuse & is superior to the filter kit gaskets.

I didn't know that! Thanks for the tip! FYI, I usually try to use Ford parts whenever possible. Mercon V, I bet I could pick up at Advanced.

Yes. Probably a dozen brands to choose from.

Here are some P/N's for tranny filter kits:
Most will have filter and gasket. As mentioned reuse the OEM gasket.
Pro King – FK266
Fram – FT1167
Pioneer Products – 745148
NAPA (filter ONLY) – ATP17796
If you don't have a drain plug now would be a good time to either install one or get a deeper pan with a drain plug.

Be careful when selecting transmission fluid. Some are not licensed by Ford, such as the Valvoline product. I've used Motorcraft, Castrol, and SuperTech.
Also, stay away from the so-called "universal" fluids that claim to cover dozens of specs.

IIRC, doesn't Ford make a pan with a plug in it that is an easy swap? Anyone have the part number off hand? Could I still reuse my gasket if I switch to that pan?

The pan is used for an E250 Econoline IIRC. Usually called the U-Haul pan. Yes you can reuse the OEM gasket since the pans are the same... minus the drain plug.

It's been busy as heck at work. I have been driving my old Chevy truck all week. I have been thinking about this noise all week. It's weird that I didn't notice it before. What's different, I wondered? Since I got home a little early, I decided to take the Marauder for a spin through the neighborhood and try to re-create the sound. Guess what? I couldn't get the noise to happen!:(
One thing that was different this weekend (when I noticed the noise) was it was raining EVERY single night I left work. I had to run the AC to keep the windows clear (and I usually don't unless I am driving in the afternoon (rare)). So, I turned on the AC on Max. Then, there was the noise. It sounded exactly like the other day! It must be the compressor. However, that AC system cranks, though. Not sure what that means.
Anyway, I plan on taking the car to the Ford dealer soon for an oil change. I'll ask them to look at it. While it's there, I'll have them change the trans filter if they didn't do it already in May.

Update 10/03/14: Drove to work this morning, ~15 miles or so. No noise at all! Of course, no a/c on either! At least it's not a transmission noise! :D
