I just put 255/45 on the rear. And I just came across a good deal for a staggered set of wheels (18x8/9, +40mm offset). Will the new rear tires be able to accommodate the 9" wide rim? Thank you for the help.

I believe the width range for 255/55 tires is 7.00" to 9.00".
I'd go the tire manufacturers website for more info.

Tire Rack has a good site for fitment on oversize situations

+1 on checking the tire manufacturers specification
Do consider the look of mounted tires, A tire with a smaller section width on a wider wheel will produce a more stretched look, popular in the import tuner world, A tire with a larger section width on a skinnier wheel will produce a more stuffed look.
Personally I'm a stuffed kinda guy. But to each his own.
Yes a 255/55 will work just fine on a 9" wheel. However if you want to confirm that you can go to tirerack.com and they have specs for most tires, you don't need to necessarily even find the same brand.
