If you can find a competent, proven engine builder I would rebuild the original block with forged internals and upgraded timing set. It is no trivial matter to find a competent builder. Good luck.

If you limit yourself to the Eaton M112, stay with the stock block. Go with forged pistons and upgraded connecting rods. Rebuild the heads. Balance the stock cast crank for the weight change. Shoot for a 9.5:1 compression ratio, which is just below stock.
But if you are tempted to do a Whipple or another bigger blower, go ahead and start with an iron block. Get the heads ported. I suggest 9:1 compression ratio for a street car.

The aluminum block can hold up to higher power just fine, although a steel crankshaft would be advisable.
