View Full Version : For Sale 1968 Mercury Monterey hot rod

BigM460

Need to sell my 1968 Mercury Monterey. Has a bunch of drive train mods. 80,000 original miles on car. Air bagged, FR500's, 447ci FE, ported Edelbrock heads and intake, Comp roller valve train, etc. C6 just freshend, new tank. Too much to write it all out. Can give all details with phone call if interested.
Have lost interest in it and has sat pretty much for the last 5-6 years. Drove maybe 300 miles in that time.
Have been asking $14,500, but will take $12,000.
Maybe cash and trade. Make any offers, you never know.
I also have all the original documentation for the car, as I am the second owner.
Can see some videos on YouTube under BigM460.

Oh, I think we'd be about equal on value. I only have the car in my sig, which I love, built by Marty. Already has new headers on it :coolman:
Many FE powered Mustangs couldn't hit 12.0 - pretty well built combination pulling that barge!:bows:

$3,900 for a car in 68 was on the high end !!!!,, That money today wouldn't buy a high end touring bicycle or much less a used-Triology Kit, !!

Swap in a tiny cube, complex modular...??

I'd keep that big thumpin' FE!

:hmmm:

Maybe swap in a toploader 4 speed with a white 'cue ball' shifter knob!

Never really been impressed with the FE engines. Power seems mediocre at best, even with all the upgrades. 545 stroker 460 was in the plan when I bought the car, now that would be big and thumping, but kept it FE because of it's originality. Don't get me wrong, it runs well, just not what I thought it would, or should.

12 flat @ 115 on the motor in a 2 1/4 ton, automatic transmission car sounds pretty darn stout in my book.

You just haven't had one built right yet.
I go the build specs - it's built pretty well!
It takes more design thought, hard to find expensive parts and with less daily driveability to be uber fast with an FE. A well built 428 in a Mustang etc can be wicked. I understand why Chris isn't impressed with the FE.
I pulled the IMPOSSIBLE to work on 390 from my 67 Cougar S code, put in a solid lifer 302 and it was twice as fun to own. I cared nothing of the car value because it was 1978-1980 era.

This one has everything but a big bore block.
And it'a heavy. And you built a great combo.
I also love they way you have it now, but spend $10k plus swapping in a stroker 385 series, go maybe a second faster in the 1/4, but when selling, the car will be worth the same as it is now. Still an odd, hot rod Merc with very limited buying audience.
Cobra kit and old truck owners seem to be the FE engine buying market.
Guys like you with factory FE cars seem to want them stock, or with alternative power plants - like you!:D
did you list this on racingjunk yet?
good luck, it's yours, hold out or change it up to regain love.

Did list on racingjunk.com. just got scammers and a couple that called, but then nothing.
You know how it is, many would like to have it, but don't have the money. Either that or want a $50,000 car for $10,000, nit picking everything on 47 year old car.

Is the factory A/C working ?

Car didn't come with factory air, but it is a factory under dash unit. Works when charged, but has a slow leak at the flare expansion valve fitting. Does use the new freon. Guessing it has leaked out as it hasn't been started or driven in over a year now.
