View Full Version : Blew A Rod....Need HELP!

Good afternoon,
I have 2004 Trilogy (#121) marauder with a 3.0 pulley and only 68k miles, pushing 13lbs of boost that just blew a rod on me over the weekend. I have about a fist size hole in the block right behind the oil filter area...
Ive owned the car for roughly a year or so, never had any issues until now...I was traveling around 100mph on expressway when all of a sudden I hear a rattle like noise under the dash and just a few moments later, white smoke everywhere. I pulled over immediately and shut the car off and got it towed home where my mechanic lifted it and showed me that its now time to build the beast stronger and better!!
Im from the Chicagoland area and I was hoping you guys can refer me to someone or a shop that can help me on this build....Im thinking of going the Cobra cast iron short block route and building it from there but Im open to suggestions. I want to have a powerful beast with a peace of mind that this wont happen again...I know this isn't a cheap repair but I want to do it the right way without spending my life savings on it either.....Any feedback, shop recommendations, parts for sale...would be greatly appreciated.
This use to be (RIDER90) marauder...purchased it off the Gentlemen he originally sold it too...heres a list of the mods:

Thanks for the heads up on the block for sale, appreciate it......and Zack, what would you say is a solid price for a bare block? Any recommendations on what Rods/Pistons to add with the iron block?....Thanks

Why do you want a cobra iron block? I would go with a aluminum teksid block , or a wap block.

Based upon what I've researched, and for the money... The 03/04 cobra Iron blocks are pretty solid..I'm no mechanic, I'm just going from suggestions and some research....why would you recommend tekskid/Wap over the iron block?

The aluminum block is about 85lbs lighter , and a teksid block is an excellent block to build , the iron blocks are strong but heavy , I wouldn't pay more than 250-300 for a teksid , and 150 for an iron block.

Teksid is light and strong. I like mine it works great.

I appreciate the feedback...Do any of you have a shop you recommend for the build? I'm thinking since I'm going to build it, I may upgrade to a 2.8 pulley as well.. I'm located in the Chicagoland area...Thank you

Have always mention to folks in meets that with power adders you need to build the engine to take the power or else--it happen to me--it will, happen again---the stock engine with all that added power stuff---look at the list of stuff folks do-=-where do you see where the engine was re-built to take such a hit--not often if ever in there listings--oh--ask me how I know--been there and done it --and that's what I have read and heard and seen over the last 12 years...--folks who get the second or third buys don't know if there motor are re-built to take it--most I would say are not........due to the cost and time necessary to due it....hope all works out well for ya and you get back to enjoying it again......

That rattling you heard was probably detonation. I would be looking into what caused it before you break your next engine. Do you have an AFR gauge?

I do not have an AFR gauge......What are some things that may have caused it?
I reached out to Lidio as well....May go the 5.0l stroker route....Opinions? Thanks

Bad fuel pump, bad gas, ETC. Rattling could also have been no oil pressure. Bottom line, an AFR gauge is your lifeline to being boosted.
Lidio can build you a stout engine at an insane price and make sure it leaves way underpowered. Good engine, but no thanks on the rest. Personally I went with a 3,200 mile used cobra short block that was so clean I'd swear it was never fired for $1,500 and I've thrown as much as 20 PSI at it so far with zero issues in 10,000 miles. I could give a rats ass about 80 more pounds on a 4,500 brick. Just up the damn boost another pound. [emoji106]
I never had any issues with the stock block at 12 PSI 456/431 for three years. Compression tested perfect the day I removed it. I just felt the need to upgrade everything before my time did run up, plus being able to turn up the wick whenever I wanted too is always a plus.

The stroker/big bore motors are overrated , and will cost a small fortune to build (around 10K) which is why I bought a crate motor , and just slapped a big azz blower in it! for what a big bore stroker cost I bought my Aluminator , and my blower!:cool4:

This is a pretty unsettling situation. At this mileage for the engine to fail would it be due to the SC add on? What else done to this engine would be linked to the failure?
Did you find out anything else in the past few months?

Yes, I knew that. I don't see where the cause of failure was ever determined...

Yes, I knew that. I don't see where the cause of failure was ever determined...the Trilogy 121 car had the blower installed shortly after my #93 got fitted.
These motors were never designed for boost.
The car made 13# of boost since 2005.
I knew it spit a plug about a year ago but never any other problems .
Neither owner ever made it to the drag strip to record any ET's so not sure if it was ever tuned.
This was the car that got towed to Detroit from Chicago on Jerry Barnes dime back in 2005 .
The repair had nothing to do with any defects from the blower install.

This is good to know! Im going to keep my eyes peeled for a tekskid short block and get some forged guts, salvage whatever I can from the old motor and drop it in and roll off into the sunset.
unless some one has more advice to give me?

Our blocks are just fine
Crack internals apart in any block and its 50/50 on being toast.

+1 and boost can do this to the best forged internals. Tune safe and drive with awareness.

I get the tune comment, what do you mean about awareness?

The awareness part is what gets most owners into trouble.
Know your car.
The sounds, the feels... everything.

Exactly. Watch your fuel pressure, air/fuel and boost gauges under normal and full blast conditions, so you know what 'good' looks like.
If you see any odd variances on these gauges, feel any stumbles or hiccups, surges or even extra power than normal - STOP and check your systems for proper function. Prevent blowing it up.
