View Full Version : Performance intake manifold options?

Been considering what I really want to do long term if I decide to build more power. I'm aware of my boosted options, and they are certainly not outside the picture, but humor me here and keep talk of boosted options to a minimum.

Given the scenario of say 5.3L 11.0:1 LT's Cams street-able

Thoughts on;

OEM intake manifold

OEM ported

Sullivan

Custom sheetmetal

FR500C

Any other viable options I'm not aware of

----------------------

I would think OEM/ported would not support the full potential of the engine, but would be simple and affordable.

Sullivan looks good, but I've heard too many bad things, particularly that it does not really start making power until after 7krpm(6k @ 5.3L) which makes sense given its single plane, no plenum design. Its also reasonably affordable.

Sheetmetal seems like it could produce efficient power and torque, they typically have short runners and large plenums - but are generally high priced $1000-2500, and anything less and I would be worried about quality.

FR500C is hard to find and expensive - but is proven capable on Cammer race engines. Could it be worth the cost? Also seems like the most likely manifold to have hood clearance issues - could just be an excuse for a fancy new hood

Opinions? Agree? Disagree? Comments?

I've also seen some old experimental Ford Racing cast magnesium manifolds - looks sketch - medium runner medium plenum - Looks like they were for B heads

And I've seen composite Ford Racing "Road Runner" looking manifolds that I guess only fit GT/GT500 heads(which is an option) but they are super rare and very expensive

I would be really cool if the manifold had room for a full size alternator instead of the factory small cased one. I would very much prefer new, or at least something that could be refinished to like new.

NA SVT can set you up

You will spend way more money to build a N/A 5.3L mod motor , and not make anywhere near the power of a S/C 4.6L , You wont see the benefit of any performance intake on a N/A mod motor.

LOL ok you will see no benefit on a N/A motor! I have a Hogans sheetmetal intake (tunnel ram) if I wasn't S/C it wouldn't make any difference.

So you would suggest sticking with the OEM? it would keep the stock sleeper look.

If your planning a N/A build any of the intakes you mention will do nothing for you , I don't like the oem intake , but if I was building a 5.3L motor in N/A form your only going to make maybe 325-350 HP (oem intake will be fine) after you spend north of 10K on your motor.

I think there is far more potential in a naturally aspirated motor than you describe, and I think for 10k I could build a bulletproof N/A motor that breaks 400rwhp.

I did not make this thread to argue wether a N/A motor can make power - I respect your opinon and I appreciate it, but lets stick to the topic of N/A intakes

So your saying you dont like any intake manifold option - thus I must not go N/A - got it.

Anyone else care to chime in?

As I said above, NA SVT..

He is the intake manifold god. No one on planet earth knows more than he does.

How many commercially available intakes are there?

Perhaps that will answer your question.

I agree with Zack, Todd is the man. If he can't make 400RWHP N/A, no one can. He used to make PSR 4v intakes if you send him yours plus money.
