I have a computer question that really pertains to my 86 Mustang. I intend on replacing the stock 1986 computer with a "newer" 1987-88 computer. When I removed the 1986 computer, some of the terminals had a white substance on some of the male terminals (PINS) that I am sure is also in the female wiring harness connector as well. Is this some sort of di-electric grease from the factory or is it some sort of corrosion? Should I clean it off and replace it with some fresh di-electric grease? Or, should I clean it with electric cleaner and assemble it dry and clean?? Or some other idea?

Not sure what it could be, corrosion is my best guess. I would clean it off and a bit of dielectric grease would never hurt

It's probably a grease they use from the factory to prevent corrosion...looks kinda like white lithium grease?? I'd just leave it and even add more if you wish.....won't hurt a thing!!

Good Luck!!

Most likely oxidation. Clean the pins on the 60 pin harness, put some di-electric grease on the new ECU, and bolt it in. Should be a small performance increase for you.

My 1990 Mustang LX 5.0 had the same stuff.....smear some on a piece of glass or your finger and you most likely will see it is grease!!;)

Those plugs are pretty well sealed and unless it was a "flood car" corrosion is unlikely!!:shake:

If it'll make ya feel better just clean it off and re-grease it!!

^^^what Marauderjack said^^^

I've seen the same thing in electrical connections used outdoors.

Thanks for the replies! It looks like a white grease. There is no corrosion on any of the connectors (like there was when I took apart the "salt & pepper shakers"). So, I'll make sure it's clean and put a little di-electric grease on the pins and re-assemble. Hopefully, this cures some of the driveability issues I have been having. :depress:

It is dielectric grease.

BTW ... You will find that same grease on (amoung other things) all of the light connectors (e.g. headlights, fog/driving, etc.).

Thanks. The car's coming up on 30 years old. After everything I have fixed or replaced on this car, this is the first thing I came across with that grease. Also, it was only on a couple pins, not all (or even most). That is why I was questioning it.

I'll reassemble tonight and cross my fingers that it works better. I guess that the newer DA1 will have to learn the setup I have for a couple key cycles (from what I read).
