Im about to replace my rear axles and had a question. Does anyone know if our axle shafts have the ABS tone rings pressed or built on to the shafts? Id take one out and look but my bearings are bad and dont know how much longer the seals will hold up and that would also require me to buy more diff fluid lol. I dont want to mess with it til Im ready to do the job. Thanks

I think they are pressed onto the axle, but I read somwhere there is a set screw.

If you are changing the axles make sure you get a new cross pin retainer bolt, they like to snap.

I have a rear end removed and a differential cover off. I would take some pics, but I don't really understand what it is you are asking. Let me know if you want me to take some pics.

He's asking about the toothed wheel on the back side of the hubs. You could see them if the rotors are removed.

Here are two pics of what I think you are talking about. Hard to tell how this thing was built.

I suggest going with the newer Panther 31 spline axles, while you're doing this. Its a prime opportunity for different gears too. I went with 3.73's and a Torsen with Ford 31's and love the combo.

Use OEM, not parts house axles. I tried NAPA and O'Reily in a pinch and both failed all over again shortly down the road on my Grand Marquis. Wound up going to OEM 28 spines on that car. Failing axles cause tiny flakes of metal to get into everything in the rear end, including the carrier bearings. Everything has to be removed, cleaned and inspected thoroughly. The job is just a PITA and not worth doing extra times.
