Autoocheck got me stiffed once, it did not include maintenance records, so miles seemed OK.
After buying, then trying to sell the truck, Carfax showed maintanence records with miles significantly higher than what the truck had, and Autocheck recorded only at title changes. Someone swapped out the speedo before going to register it.
Use Carfax.

I've seen carfax report cars as total losses, and they've never had an accident. I suppose it could go either way.
