View Full Version : Coolant leak?

For the past ~30 days I have had what appears to be an intermittent coolant leak.
I first noticed it when I jacked the front up about 2ozs ran down near the front of the oil pan. I didn't see dripping again for about a week.
There are fluid trails on the driver side front cover near the crank pulley.
I pressure tested the coolant system twice and for 10 days no leaking.
I suspect it's the water pump. I am not 100% sure it is coolant, it is definitely not oil.
Is there a way to verify that it is coolant?
Any ideas on what the source might be?
Thank you.

What color is it?
Does it smell sweet?

Take off the water pump pulley and see if there is any coolant "tracks" from the shaft.

I use the Gold Coolant. It has a slight petroleum smell, but it could have picked that up from the engine.
The color appears clear. When it evaporates it does not leave a stain on the driveway.
I am going to put a pan under the car and try to collect some the next time it drips. I will report back.

+1
Believe there is some sort of semi exposed bearing on the shaft that starts leaking when the water pump is starting to go, that's where I would start first.

Is the collant jug low after the car has been sitting all night? Below the cold level line?

Update - yes it's coolant. Collected in a drip pan and sweet taste.
Turned out to be seepage from a few places, lose rad hose, crimp between rad top and rad body, etc. I also suspected the water pump and with 90K miles replaced it.
So far so good.
Thank you to everyone for your help.

Good to hear its fixed. I hate finding those problems! I have used baby powder with good results after washing everything down it turns dark after from the coolant.
