View Full Version : Horn fuse blowing

My horn fuse keeps blowing under the hood.
Also, my cruise control stopped working, but I can't find a blown fuse for it.
When I replace the fuse for the horn, the horn will blow for a split second, and the horn fuse blows again.
Everything was working fine last night. I used the cruise control last night on my trip home from Raleigh, and my horn honked when I locked the car when I got home. Today, I tried to use the cruise control and noticed that it wasn't working, but didn't think anything bad of it until I locked the car again using the remote and the horn didn't honk.
So....I know there is a short somewhere, especially since the horn tries to operate as soon as I start to stick a new fuse in, but I don't know where to start, especially since I can't figure out the deal with the cruise control not working either.
So far, I don't see the "normal" problems that a lot of people have seen with the chaffing on the wiring harnesses under the hood.
I'm most likely going to just have to take it to the dealership on Monday, but thought I would see if anyone here has any ideas.
Thanks!

Horn relay could be shorted to ground or a pinched wire under steering column. Better let a good dealer look at it since it may be an easy fix.

It's under waranty, so I am not worried about getting it fixed, just rather fix it myself if I could.
I don't think it's in the steering wheel. The radio controls still work fine. But, I guess anything is possible.
Tom - Yeah, I thought about Russell, but thought it was just as easy to post a general message.

I would tend to agree that the short is in the steering column.

Carfixer is a top notch Ford wrench, he has given great advise on repairs, I recommend checking with him.

Martyo,
If it wasn't under waranty, yeah, I would give you my used george foreman grill as a prize, but since the simple fix for me is to just drop it off to the dealer in the morning, I'll just keep my grill.
Thanks anyway..... I'll let you know what the problem is when it is found.

I talked to one of the technicians where I work. He said it is most likely the horn itself.
Just my 02.

Marty we received a George Forman grill as a wedding present two years ago. It has never been used and is still in the box. It's yours if you want it. When are you getting married??

I use my George Forman Grille twice a week. It's great for burgers and chicken.

Well....I just got my car back from the dealer.
RoyLPita....You win the prize! I don't know what the prize is, but you win it.
The horns were full of water and shorted out. The dealer said that they were aimed the wrong direction from the factory and couldn't properly drain. They probably got full of water from my last few passes through the laserwash to rinse the pollen off the car.
They had to order me a new set of horns.
I also asked if the horns shorting out was the cause of the cruise control not working, and they said "yes", and that they were on the same fuse under the hood, even though the owners manual doesn't specify it. I have to trust them on this info, since the problem is not fixed yet, and they did not put my fuse back in until they get the new horns put on, which should be tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who offered their ideas. Maybe I'll send RoyLPita some raw hamburger meat for his George Forman Grill in the mail. Do you think it will be ok by the time it gets there????

Butch,
Thanx, But I'll pass on receiving any perishable in the mail. I'm just happy to be of help.

I'm getting married in exactly 4 weeks and 4 days and I'd love a new grill. :)
PM me if you'd like to be invited to the wedding or reception. (We're having a frozen margaritas and a chocolate fountain!)
