View Full Version : New intercooler?

So I have my car in the shop getting headgaskets and pistons...

I figured while I was at it, I would consider some combination of mods:
98 intake cams
IW 10%+ OD dampener
Torque converter (mine is still stock)

The guys at the shop think I should go with the 98 cams, but over the other options, recommended I have them build me a custom intercooler instead.

Said mine was too thick and not enough surface area.

I have an icevex unit in there now. I'd have to measure to get demensions.

I'm sure they could make a better IC, but I'm not quite convinced. I have read where some of the guys here are using the icevex units and seem to like them just fine.

As far as temps, mine seem to stay within 30* or so of ambient. Even on the hotter days in summer I never seen em go beyond 120-130. After hot lapping my car once at the 1/8 track, I did see 140-150ish degrees at the end, but it was already hot and humid, and just made a pass... Seems like I seen 130ish after the first pass.

I also recall that when I bought the car and had it tuned by Dennis Reinhart, he made a comment that I might need a bigger intercooler...

Thoughts?

Treadstone intercoolers work amazing

Zack, have you tried the CXRacing intercoolers? I know you've used their pipe before.

No. Treadstone is the best.

Any more thoughts on this?

I am reaching a decision point with this, and wondering if anyone else has an opinion?

I'd say get the cams. You can swap intercoolers later if needed.

Actually, doing both things if you go with a CXRacig intercooler wouldn't be too much of a stretch, would it?

Oops, I meant to say Treadstone not CXRacing.

Already getting some cams cams for sure. I just feel like my IATs were pretty good already good...

Also the shop was recommending a bell intercooler core

What exactly are you trying to make a decision about?

Trying to decide if the intercooler upgrade is necessary. At 10-12 lbs I didn't really seem to have real bad IATs.

The shop is thinking 15-17 lbs with cams and an 18% OD. I'm hoping for 15 because I'm not sure I'm comfortable with more than that. Actually we've discussed If it ends up too high, the shop will machine the balancer a bit smaller.

If I seen 120-130* IATs before, with a few more lbs of boost, should I expect that much of an increase in IATs?

I don't really race, and if I did it would be mostly 1/8.

They estimated 800 for the custom IC.

If the highest you have seen under boost is 120-130*, I'd pass for now.
When I had the Icevex I would see a rise of 45-50* with 18psi. The one I have now gets about 25-35* rise on a 19-20psi pull.

As far as the thickness goes, the bigger the better is the way I see it.

I don't think you need to spend that much money. Treadstone makes bigger intercoolers than the one I posted above for much less than what the shop had quoted you.
How much HP do you think you will be pushing? Pump gas?

It will be 93, hoping for 475ish. I know this guy's dyno is known to hurt feelings. It's a mustang with eddy break

I'm thinking of robbing the meth kit of my old tbird and calling it a day
