Sunoco has fuel they call 98 oct racing fuel @ $4.43 per gallon.
when going to the track does anyone think this can be used in our mm's w/o causing any problems..can it be used straight or should it be mixed.. would it make any difference in track time..
Thank ya'll..

Mark - IMO I would mix the 98 with 93.

I wouldn't use it straight, mixing it sounds ok. Why take a chance ,if their was a gain it would be very small and not worth taking a chance. At least thats my 2 cent's.

I personally would not recommend it. Higher octane fuels tend to burn more slowly, and the effect is going to be like retarding the timing in a way. Steeda did a test a while ago where they ran high octane racing fuel on a Mustang and found it actually lost power on the racing fuel. Of course, now if it's unleaded, I don't see anything wrong with blending it though.........

Sunoco does not produce a 98 octane unleaded racing gas. They do make a 100 octane unleaded racing gas designed for high performance street cars, muscle cars, classics, street rods, motorcycles, karts and marine applications. It has the highest octane rating of any street legal fuel. Sunoco GT 100 contains no metallic compounds to harm catalytic converters or oxygen sensors. It contains a comprehensive additive package for greater engine protection and reduced fuel system deposits as measured by the BMW test. Sunoco GT 100 is also compatible with virtually all two-stroke synthetic and mineral based motor oils. I believe it is also marketed under the brand name "Cam 2" as well. This will not hurt your engine, you just wont appreciate any performance increase.

Unless the car is tuned to run on 98, you are wasting your money. Stick with 93.

Dennis included a "Race Gas" program with his big group buy!!?? I wondered how I could use it short of running the tank dry and adding 100 octane....re-tune....and go to the track?? (I don't race my car)!! :nono:

For the racer...I guess he could drive to the track....switch to a remote tank in the trunk with it's own fuel pump and a few gallons of 100 octane....re-tune and RACE!!?? Sounds like a bunch of trouble for little or no gain!!

Like junehhan said the car will run best at the octane tuned for with minimal detonation.....anything more in the way of octane detracts from performance!! :depress:

Just leave it at the "Premium Tune" and run 93-94 when available...anything less and you risk detonation!! :nono:

Okay...While I am pursuing this in another thread, I thought I'd stop back here with some notes from a pro.

Mike Lopez is a professional drag racer/builder, some of you here have been to his shop, High Speed Performance, for our local dyno tunes. I put the questions to him, and he thinks that mixing a 50/50 solution for the drag strip is a good way to go. Mike sells 100 octane race gas for 5 bucks a gallon, because he has to pay more for it in 5000 gallon lots. But, he thinks it can be had cheaper from larger vendors, like Speedway or Sunoco.

If you start out with a 1/4 tank of 93 pump gas, and add a 1/4 tank of 100 octane, you'll have a 1/2 tank of 96-97 gas on board. Mike says it won't "directly" enhance performance, like make a difference you can detect, but it will work to prevent detonation, the results of which are pulled timing and reduced spark, therefore less performance without it.

In this round about way, this mixed gas allows you to see your best performance from your MM, and that makes sense to me. Mike added that even on a bone stock MM shouldn't have to be retuned for this occassional bonus in octane, however, he added that if you're going to race like this with any frequency or regularity, getting you MM tuned for this mix is beneficial.

BTW, IMHO, I would not suggest anyone race with less that a half tank of gas in the MM. It's been shown that the fuel supply system drops pressure in the higher RPMs, which will also cause pulled timing, but not pulled spark. Much more lethal to the engine than just detonation, or, so I have been told by the pros, and the MM specialists both. As usual, just my .02C
