Hey guys, I hope someone may have insight into my much loved 04 MM.
Last night . When I started it. It was idling rough and made a weird noise (mechanical).
I shut it off and restarted it. The weird rattling noise stoped but, the check engine light came on. About 5 miles later it was 3/4 hot. This morning (30 degrees). Fluid levels were normal (oil and water). Had codes read (p0316&p1235). Drove 2 miles temp was rising and the rattling noise was back . I drove at 25 mph. To my home and as soon as I turned in my driveway the engine shutdown. Any suggestions?

Hopefully you didn't do serious damage to the engine. Aluminum engines don't like to get hot.

Stuck thermostat and or cooling system needs to be burped.

P0316 is Misfire detected at startup. That could have been the poor idle and funny noises.

P1235 is Fuel pump control out of range. That could mean the fuel pump or the FPDM (fuel pump driver module) is bad. That would account for the engine shutdown and the poor running.

Turn the key to ON (not start) and see what you have for fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail.

The code says something about crank shaft sensor. Would that cause the noise, stumble etc.?
Thanks again guys.

Is anyone familiar with tsb 06513 for 2004 MM?
The p0316 code popped up in it. Engine and engine cooling.

That TSB appears to be for a Mustang.

Sorry it is also for a Marauder.

No experience with it and a dealer most likely touch it since car is out of warranty.

P0316 -
First off, you'll want to repair any other misfire DTC codes if present prior to diagnosing this code. If you own a Ford vehicle and you have a P0316 along with one of the other misfire codes, you should check for appropriate TSBs (technical service bulletins), as there are some TSBs that in part involve reprogramming the PCM. Doing that requires specialized equipment. Some Ford vehicles even needed a new cylinder head as a result of the valve. Regardless, if you have a Ford with multiple misfire codes including this one, check for TSBs. If the P0316 is the only code, then it's time to do a bit more diagnosing of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, and their associated connectors and wiring. A tip we've found is "Since this code indicates a start up misfire, pay attention to items which may expand or contract when cold (if the code sets when the engine is cold), or hot (if the code sets on a hot restart)." Realistically, the freeze frame data from the PCM will be helpful in tracking down the problem. As will a good DVOM (digital volt-ohm meter), so you can perform tests on the wiring and the sensors.

Find out why its running hot 1st. Then address noise/misfires and verify fuel pressure. Just rent a gauge from a parts store. Pushing the schrader valve in tells you nothing.

Any recent repairs or maintenance?

"P1235" gave me flashbacks to this thread (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1200839&postcount=26).

Nobody's said it yet, but I won't at all surprised to find you have zero compression on cylinder #8 and will require motor work.
(compression loss caused by the engine running hot, dropping a valve seat, bending a valve, etc...)

Pull spark plug #8 (driver's side closest to firewall) and see if it's soaked. If it is, a compression/leakdown test would be my next step. I wouldn't drive the car much until it's diagnosed. If you have zero compression on cylinder #8, disconnect your #8 injector so you don't wash the piston ring out while running the motor...then you might get away with just doing the top end, like I did.

If my hunch is indeed correct, you may find assistance in the following threads (or PM Zack or myself):

I disconnected my battery for an hour like my friend suggested to see if it would clear any computer codes and to see if that would help. My Marauder turned right over with no problem, no noise, no heat issues and no code. I ran it for a half hour and it just rumbled along. I'm really thinking it's a faulty crank sensor. Thoughts?
