View Full Version : Supercharger Crank Pulley Hub Wobble

Has anyone else had a problem with a slight wobble of the supercharger crank pulley hub on the harmonic balancer? Mine is tight as a drum and I thoroughly cleaned the pulley before install, but it wobbles slightly which causes the UPR tensioner to jiggle until the revs go up. The serp belt on the rest of the pulleys is steady as a rock. I'm thinking of getting a new harmonic balancer to bolt the pulley to but wonder if it even matters or if it will solve the problem. No noise or performance issues that I have noticed. It's very annoying though.

I had to re-center mine once. It still has a tiny wobble. Zero F's given

No wobble with my Trillogy lower pulley. Will see what the Metco unit does soon.

The hole on the hub could be getting oval just buy one from metco. I have the very last trillogy hub just got it 1 month ago to go with the last marauder ever made!

If I'm not mistaking the Metco and the LFP are identical.
I remember Dave (impalaslayer) had a ton of issues with his loosening. I guess I was just lucky on my Metco, Joe's Metco, and Mikes LFP as all three spun 100% true and never loosened up? Wish I could help but sounds like you installed it as you should have?
Too bad your relations are now soured up with Metco as I'm quite sure they would have sent a replacement. I know Rick pretty well and he has always been very concerned about quality control as any vendor should be.
If anything he could have recommended something to safe guard the next go round. I'm never apposed to hearing ideas on how I could have installed something differently as long as it's not a B.S. excuse for overall design.
Maybe your on the right track with replacing the balancer as it certainly takes a hit with the added pulley. Although I would have purchased either an ATI or an innovators west because they have proven to take beatings and have an excellent track record.

All I said to them is that their washers are brittle and break, which caused me a ton of heartache trying to figure out the problem with very loud knocking. I was upset but did not say anything all that horrible to them, other than the washers are no good. I couldn't sleep for days until I solved the issue. I have almost every item they sell for the Marauder. $1327 worth.

I ordered a new LFP hub to go with my new Dayco balancer.

These Metco/LFP hubs were meant to be hub centric to 03-04 Cobra dampeners.
The marauder pulleys don't have the same dia pilot hub.
I am surprised no one is running a centering ring to take care of this issue.
Sure you can re-center it and rely on bolts but you'll never get it 100% IMO.

I got the Marauder balancer already (too late to cancel order) and the Cobra balancer arrives tomorrow. I'll do a comparison with pics. Not sure when I will have a chance to pull the hub since I hate working in the cold wet driveway on my back. We'll see how industrious I am on Sunday.

You can use my wife's side of the garage if you want. Kinda tight on that side but doable. I can make sure it's tee shirt weather. LOL

Oh, I'll probably just tough it out sometime next week. I ordered a cheapo $75 1/2" drive cordless impact wrench off ebay so I don't have to borrow Eric's all the time, and I have to wait for it to arrive.

I got the Cobra harmonic balancer today but it not even close to being the right one. The holes don't line up to mount the hub. ????????

Looks like a 5 sp Mach 1 balancer
I'm almost positive a cobra balancer is not available aftermarket

So it's all your car's fault we no longer have a Marauder... bringing this one back from the dead... Bring this car to Louisville so we can all go for a ride in the last Marauder... kinda sounds like a movie title... "The last Marauder"...

Interesting this came up.
I'm doing a trilogy install and noticed my hub was a bit larger than the pilot. I called metco and there was a fix- a centering ring. Rick sent it out same day (2 actually because I have a backup), was more than willing to have me send the hub in for the counterbore but we did it in house just the same.
Hats off to a stand up company!

This is a topic we might be addressing, haven't thought about a new harmonic balancer for our current build, have a new 8 bolt crank should we reuse or replace, are there any performance enhancements?
It was all good before removal

So is the centering ring needed with the Innovators West crank pulley? I don't see any wobbling, but maybe I just accidentally got it lined up without one.

there is literally .2 difference- very noticable. so noticable as my son was putting a bolt in and i was supervising ( :D ) i spotted it. i was like whoa hold on that isn't right, and i had never put one on in my life.
again- it's a known issue on the stock balancer as rick had them already made and on the shelf :2thumbs:

I gambled on my monster lower Cog pulley without the ring as the previous owner didn't have it anymore. Luckily the ATI balancer has three additional bolt holes hiding behind small locating holes on the ring and ATI said by all means drill them out and run six ARP bolts to hold her still.
Luckily it spins more true than any other pulley and has not even tried to budge.
I didn't even know Metco had these available. I guess I was also lucky with my old Trilogy set up with the +4! It spun true and stayed put as well. I remember hearing some of the stories..

I had the lower Trilogy hub come loose , did not know the problem at the time.
It made a horrible banging noise.
I had it fixed from a trusted pal who has a shop.
I think he had to tap out at least one bolt that sheared off.
What I am trying to figure out is , since I have a Cobra motor transplant, how come I did not have to get a different lower hub from the Marauder crank?
hope you get it resolved Tom , good news 60* Sunday !

Thanks Bob , I was confused when it appeared that by the comment Tom made about the diameter and hole alignment, ie; the lower hub was different from 6 or 8 bolt crank

The raised center register used in the Marauder balancer differs very slightly from that of the Lightning/Cobra.
While many have used our Lightning/Cobra hub in alternate applications without the centering ring, the ring does serve to optimize the fit on applications with the smaller Marauder-style register.
The centering ring is not needed with the IW balancer, and it is not intended for use with LFP's knock-off parts.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful for all of us. So many different combinations available, it must be a nightmare to keep up with it.

If I'm not mistaking the Metco and the LFP are identical.
I've had a few inquiries regarding our hub-centric rings for LFP hubs.
Some of you may not be aware, but the LFP hub is a knock-off. It is one of many products that he has copied, and he intentionally markets them so that they are easily confused with our parts. This has been going on for years.
As you can imagine, I will not machine an LFP hub or provide a centering ring for one. I will respectfully ask that you contact LFP.
Thanks for understanding,
Rick

Wish I would have known about this a couple years ago.
I had the wobble. Going WOT down the front straight of Portland International Raceway supercharger belt lost a rib and put a sizeable dent in the hood of my black from inside the engine bay. I replaced the balancer with an IW unit and continued using the Metco ring but boxed up the hub and threw it in storage. Also upgraded the tensioner from stock and have not had an issue since. Spendy but could not risk more damage to the hood, also I know why the Cobra's have the belt cover haha.
