My power steering pump is beginning to sound like I have a supercharger. Kinda cool but NOT. I had no idea our pumps actually ran off of transmission fluid. Thinking about putting fully snthetic trans fluid in it when i change the pump, shoudnt have any issues correct?

As long as the fluid you use meets the Ford specs in the owners manual you'll be OK.

The Ford spec is MERCON - Motorcraft MERCON ATF.

My power steering pump is beginning to sound like I have a supercharger. Mary's car sounded the same way when we bought it in '07. Fluid was dark and roagy-looking. I did a few drain & fills with a turkey baster and it quieted right down. Been fine ever since. Try doing a few drain fills first before you condemn the pump.

My fluid is pretty dirty but i think the pump done just about had it. The fluid level isnt low but when i start it the whine is loud as hell.

Like RF said... try changing the fluid out FIRST! It's the cheapest and easiest thing to do!

Hey i thinked that flush did me a little justice. I flushed the system with BG quick clean for power steering then added new fluid. Seems like it got quiet again. Will know for sure when i go start it after getting cold.

I'd check the VAPS module, it's wiring and the connector.

"The Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) system controls the level of power assistance available to the driver based on vehicle speed. Below 3.2 km/h (2 mph), full power steering assist is provided to lessen steering efforts and increase maneuverability. Between 3.2 km/h (2 mph) and 191 km/h (119 mph), steering assist will decrease gradually at a calibrated rate to raise steering efforts for increased directional stability and greater road feel. Above 191 km/h (119 mph), steering assist is constant.

The VAPS module outputs a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) current to the control valve actuator. The control valve actuator controls the hydraulic valve that determines the amount of hydraulic assist provided to the steering gear. The amount of assistance provided varies with the control valve actuator current, which is based on vehicle speed.

The vehicle speed is provided to the VAPS module by the powertrain control module (PCM)."

The VAPS module is attached to the power steering rack near the oil filter.

Don't do this but....I once had a power steering pump that was noisy on an F150 and I removed some of the fluid (a few ounces) and dumped some 80w90 gear lube in there, Quieted right down and no further issues.

Hi can any body suggest what to do my power steering is hardTry lubricating the u-joints in the steering shaft. It's a common problem since they're so close to the exhaust manifold. Liberally douse them with WD-40 or similar and work the steering back and forth. If this doesn't help, then you either have a bad VAPS module as suggested, a bad pump, a bad rack, or some other binding in the steering system.

Thank you everyone I took my mm to a trusted mechanic and he drained the power steering fluid and nothing he says give it A couple of days and it might loosen up.
What do you think?

+1 on lubricating the shaft. I used the liquid wrench lubricant spray.

I have used Lucas power steering stop leak in the past with great results.
