Interesting article.
Why would ford want to tear it down, farmland for 467 acres in that area of so-so farmland would be about 3 million.
Much less that they are being offered by the feel-good job creating option.

Another article, perhaps ford just wants more money, understandable.

Shame. Know it will be missed.
At one time we had the big three here, but all have long since closed. Gm building is still standing, but is now an office park. Gm moved out of St. Louis to Wentzville and is now being retooled to build the Colorado and add another shift. http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/loss-of-corvette-a-turning-point-for-st-louis-manufacturing/article_7b8400ee-4abc-5de3-b1c8-2a2145f2ef53.html
Ford plant was torn down after sitting idle for many years. Space is now office and retail shopping area.

Chrysler building, they didn't waste anytime tearing it down after it closed and last I heard it is still just green space. http://www.stltoday.com/suburban-journals/metro/news/chrysler-plants-closing-causes-billion-impact/article_1519d934-b6f8-5617-8ce1-0826b80c4a23.html
Unfortunate sign of the times.

I posted this from a news radio report ( this morning ) that said paperwork had been submitted for the demolition of the plant .
News at 5PM Elgin county offcials said no paper work had been submitted yet for the go ahead to tear down the plant yet .

That's a shame. I always wanted to go there and take the tour. I may have to drive over once the demolition starts and try to find some bricks or other small debris as a souvenir. I wonder what happened to some of the huge Ford logos that were on the building.

Good thinkin', I might do the same thing. It's worth saving some kind of physical memory of the place.

You know what? Screw it. Drive your car and don't go. This will be nothing, but upsetting. Enjoy what you have today, forget about the downside of what "Once was".

Most of you guys are too young to remember when Ford closed their Edgewater, NJ plant (which is now a pier jutting into the Hudson with shops and condos).
They replaced Edgewater with a big plant in Mahwah, NJ, and then they eventually closed that plant.
My father-in-law worked at both plants and then wound up at the Ford Teterboro, NJ, parts depot.
That depot has also been closed.

Glad to have toured it in 2010 and 2011.
I've been past there a few times since then. There's no Ford signage left and it's quite desolate looking. Anyone thinking about making a trek will likely be disappointed so, incorporate it with something else (perhaps a trip to the Falls).

Now I'm even more glad I got pictures of The Blackbird in front of the big sign when we went by in '05 on our way to Lidio's.

I remember that plant. I was working at the Teterboro parts depot at the time, maybe 1965 till 1970. Almost became a foreman.
The older guys didn't particularly like when I drove into the parking lot with my new 65 Corvette. The younger guys drooled.
The depot had a small closed off mechanical shop. We peeked into the window when one of the first 2+2 Mustangs was brought in.

^^^You think you had it rough driving the vette into parking lot. Try driving a Datsun car and Mazda truck on any of the Big 3 lots to repair their copier machines in the 90's.
Got a lot of exercise in those days

Made the final "panther party" in June 2011. Thanks Adam!
Too bad I missed out on the Panther tribute meet at the plant a few years ago. I would have loved to have been there and take pics and have memories. I guess I'll have to make up for it when I take my future Mopar sedan up to the Canadian Chrysler LX plant instead.

Nice pic, Babbage! It is too bad that the plant is being demolished. It is a sign of the times when it's more profitable to let all the importers assemble cars here in North America.

I tried to purchase all the outdoor display Mercury signs when the line went away. They had to send them all to Ford so they could be destroyed. Sad :(

i am proud to have owned many cars built at that plant and all the cars you and I all enjoy made by Canadian workers.
If we get some dry weather next week Ill run the Marauder out to Talbotville and snap some pics of whats left of the plant.

I have had 4 myself from the plant. And many relatives and friends who earned good livings from STAP.
The one thing i enjoy the most is the thousands of ex STAP workers, many of whom i seem to encounter on a regular basis. You can spot them from a mile away and up close they let you know that you are driving the jewel of the plant. No doubt you know what i am talking about.
I still think they could be churning out cop cars and cabs at a good profit margin but they seemed determined to end the era. The "big three" automakers don't seem so big anymore, Toyota has more workers in Canada now than any others.
Time marches on.
