View Full Version : 150k....Time for timing chains & such?

As the title states. Slight rattling on startup with 144k. I use Napa Gold filters but even with the Motorcraft filter it didnt help.
I know there is no recommended mileage to replace them, but im not sure if its necessary to do all of it. Do people usually buy the ~$500 kit and do it all or do they typically just install new guides and/or tensioners?

I would inspect all of the components before committing to one or the other. I've done timing on 2 mod motors but both were around 100k at the time and the chains were fine. I just did the guides/tensioners.
I have never seen a chain wear out.

I have only dealt with older ford v8s before the Marauder but Ive never had a problem with a timing chain before. I figured just the tensioners and guides would be worn but thought id ask ya'll about the chains too. Thanks!

Is this a difficult job on the MM? On my f150 space was so tight I had a hard time envisioning getting my valve covers back in place after removal. We ended up replacing the engine but curious about getting the valve covers and timing cover off the MM. Is there room to work?

It's easy as can be if you simply remove the motor mount nut and Jack it up. I could throw the cover from five feet away and it would probably fall right in! Use a heavy duty impact socket vertically between the mount and the crossmember for safety.
Besides, if your good, you can leave them on, just loosen the bolts..

You could definitely just loosen the passenger side bolts and shimmy that timing cover off, but...it's a good time to also replace the valve cover gaskets as well as the grommets/seals/whatever they're called around the spark plugs. Fel-Pro VS50477R for that. I would definitely jack the motor up and get that passenger side valve cover removed.
Either way, regardless of how you do it, a timing cover gasket is needed. Fel-Pro TCS45980 is what I used.

Very useful information for those that havent done it yet. Thanks for the tip on jacking up the engine. Now just need to buy the parts and get some quotes on powdercoat (:

When you have the passenger side cam cover off you can grind down the boss inside so you won't have to jack the engine up again.

And from what i saw on ctrlravens post the secondary tensioners do not need to be replaced correct? Most people on there said they never did them.

The secondary tensioners do not need to be replaced. If they failed you would of already knew about it cause you'd have some major damage in the head/s.
L/R Guides
L/R Guide Arms
L/R Metal Tensioners
Timing Cover Gasket kit
Coolant (good time to replace thermostat as well if it needs to be done)
Impact gun for crank bolt
That's all you need unless you want to replace anything else. It may be a wise idea to replace the o-rings in the COT as well since that has to be removed. It can be done without removal though but requires some shimming and trimming to get the timing cover off. Timing cover bolts are I think 18 ft. lbs. torque, just make note as some bolts are short and tall.

They should. I ordered the guides, guide arms and gaskets from Advance Auto Parts and just the tensioners from RockAuto.

Alright, i got all my parts and got the cover off. I did the guides and tensioner one side at a time. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of my chains may have jumped a tooth while i had it all apart. How can i tell besides turning the engine over by hand till it wont turn anymore haha

I believe this is an interference engine, meaning the valve and piston will collide if the timing is off. sorry can't help with info, but don't turn it over until you get clarification.
MercuryZephyrZ7

It is an interference engine. I assumed i could swap out the tensioners and guides without moving the chain but i want to be 100% sure ive got it right. I took it back apart and removed the chains now so i can just set it correctly. Was hoping someone would be helpful enough to give the info. My searches come up with a lot of 2V timing articles but not much for the 4V.

Here is a great deal on the factory repair manuals on ebay.

It does list the Marauder in the manuals in a 4v section.

Well i got the job done. My guides looked really good. I swapped them out and got everything back together. I even bought the Harbor Freight powder coater and an oven and gave it a go! Its by no means perfect, but now i can practice. Thanks for all the help and input to help me out. It really did.

Any more rattle at startup?
MercuryZephyrZ7
04-24-2015, 06:09 PM
No, the rattle on startup is gone. It sounds very smooth at startup. Also i noticed that when i would wind it up to 4 or 5k rpm it would make a whining noise...almost like a supercharger whine. Now that seems to have gone away from what i can tell too.
