View Full Version : Starter Working Too Hard to Crank Stroker

I feel my starter is working too hard to crank my new stroker block. Do you guys have any simple ideas to address this? I recall reading something about changing the ground wire location, but couldn't recite why or how this works.

Congrats on your build, good job.
How many CCA is your battery? 650CCA is stock, many including myself went with Motorcraft 850cca.

Adding a ground is a good idea, haven't done this.

Get a higher cranking output battery as suggested. Also a big 3 upgrade will help.

Stroker won't make a difference at all. I have a 5.0 stroker. The swap di not change how it started. Pull the connectors off the starter, use some 120 grit sandpaper on both sides, reconnect with electrical grease.

Make sure your grounds are good too. No engine paint, etc.

Thanks you! Will check the battery size. I'll look into adding a ground. That sounds like a simple solution

Hmmm. I didn't think so either, but I read of others going to larger displacement having the same issues. More importantly, I was able to turn the flexplate by pushing on the teeth with a screw driver before I swapped engines and I couldn't do the same after the swap (without contact between the flex plate and the torque converter). Will roughen the battery terminals as you suggested though. It can't hurt.

Will do. I am trying to remember where the grounds are. Two near the battery and one behind the engine. Is that all?

No chance your timing chain is off a tooth is it? Your OE starter should be fine. I only upgraded because it was pretty..

Wow, I would love that.
The car starts fine and I noticed it is getting easier on the starter after a few miles on the engine. I'll work on making sure I have good grounds. I am 100% sure the timing chains are correct. Thanks.

Battery cranking amps are most often the issue. If your battery is old it puts out even less than rated. Of course the cables need to be decent as well.
One way to tell is check the voltage at the battery when cranking. If it is a cable problem the voltage won't drop as much while cranking. If it is a battery amps issue the voltage will drop like a rock.

No issue whatsoever! I did have to clock it. No biggie. All the cables reached as well.
