Hi,

I've recently developed a kind of whine, rattle, vibration sound. Not always there and not always loud or noticeable. And only there mostly when accelerating but then goes away while still accelerating. Car runs normal. I'm thinking its a heat shield starting to loosen or something to do with the exhaust. My brother drives the car sometimes too and he said he has been noticing it also.

So first I was going to Big O Tires and just asked them to listen for a noise and they agreed to tighten the heat shield. They had three mechanics drive it and listen but none noticed any unusual noises. They did come up with some other things to fix but after I got the car back, I still notice the noise.

I'll take it to an exhaust shop since they probably have a better ear for such things. I'm about 155,000 miles. Anyone have had heatshield rattles on thier car?

My driver side exhaust manifold heat shield had broken from some of the mounting bolts rattling. Good place to check.

I don't believe I've ever heard it while ideling. It does sound more like the driver's side to me but either just under me or maybe slightly more forward.

I took it several places. No one has been able to hear the noise. Its like a vibration noise/rattle. Tracy Ford did mention that maybe it only does it when the car has not warmed up yet. That is probably true since that seems when I mostly hear it. They seemed satisfied with that answer.

I get the same thing on cold start up, the rattling happens after it has warmed up and the idle speed drops down. I suspect the heat shield but haven't crawled under the car yet.
