Is anyone familiar with these engines? Just the other day the heater hose t connector dry rotted and cracked. Replaced it with a brass t connector, then noticed the black soot coming from the exhaust so my brother in law rev it to 4k in an attempt to clear the exhaust, Well after the 3 attempt the engine seemed to loose power. Turned off engine then restart rev it but won't go past 2.5k it stubbles. I've read where these engines are known for jumping time, plastic guides damage or breaking chains. Car idea ok

Sure, it's always the brother-in-law. It sounds like it sensed a problem (probably from no load 4K rpm ) and went into limp mode. You need to take it down to your FLAPS and have them read your codes. You didn't say whether or not the CEL came on.

No cel. I'm about to do a compression test in a few I'll post the results shortly

Many cars have a rev limiter in neutral. You need to take the car out on the road and give it an Italian Tune-up.

If it won't rev in gear, then you may have a clogged cat. If it needs timing chain work, good luck...it's at the back of the motor.

Here are the results after the compression test.

Nothing wrong with those numbers.

What else can be the issue? I'll put it back together and record a short video to post

Oh yeah, I know about those...Last winter I put a new (used) one in one of my daughters '03 Explorer. The left bank timing chain (when looking at it from the front) is actually at the back of the engine, and the nylon chain tensioner went, causing enough chain slack to break the cam cover. To replace that chain, you have to pull the engine, and then install a new chain tension etc etc etc. Since it had to come out either way, it was cheaper to find a low mile used engine than do the repair. It behaved like yours is doing when the tensioner was bad, no revving, limited power, a bit of extra chain noise from back there. I assumed it was from the cam being out of time due to the chain slack, but it wasn't bad enough to bend any valves. It actually didn't idle too bad, but kept setting an engine code light. The switch wasn't too hard, though. Good luck with it.

Thanks for all the help fellas. Guess I'll have to deliver the bad news to my pops now. I did see a motor(used) on eBay for $600

Definitely sounds like the chains are loose. Did this over the summer on the womans dads explorer. Such a pain. The tensioners are referred to as cassettes I do believe. The parts are cheaper than replacing the motor. You'll have to pull it either way you go pretty much.

I'll probably be the one given the job to save $$$

If you do decide to replace the engine, make certain you get an exact replacement. Some of them (mine) were flex fuel and I suspect that the computers & engine management systems are different between the two. I think it was the 5th digit in the VIN that has to match, do some Google home work before you buy

Thanks.. I think I'll just try replacing whatever's broken and its most likely the cassettes in the rear of the motor it'll be a first time experience pulling a motor. The timing chain set is pretty cheap. I've searched and found 4.0 sohc v6 for the Rangers but was told their not the same setup because I would of bought one and replace the intake manifold. This vehicle is an 03' explorer XLT 4 wheel drive

Before I start looking up replacement engines I'd like to post some new info I found maybe you guys can comment on the new findings

To my knowledge the inlet of the cats are suppose to be cooler than the outlet
