Stupidest idea EVER!!! Trying to change plugs in my wife's 5.4 3v truck.
6 broke! Really! Lets make a plug that the top and bottom are only connected by the porcelain. Down in a 6" deep well! That half the engine is up under the cowl! Stupid stupid stupid

3/8 air impact wrench for removal
15+ sets and never broken one 4.6/5.4 3v spark plug
Kinda pissed as I spent the $100 for the removal tool kit and have not had a chance to use it.
Extraction is really not that bad with the proper tools. Good luck.

Have ordered the tool. After the 1st one broke I made some calls. Used an impact, but 5 more still broke. Hope the tool works well!

Now look forward to a coil or three dieing in the next month or two - always happens.

Changing the coils too. You aren't talking about new coils dieing I hope?
It has 76000 miles and has started the light load skip they are so famous for. Had no idea the plugs broke like they did.

Seriously. If you have not delt with 3v plugs then its hard to understand. We broke allot of 3v plugs in the early days. Now we all rattle them out with our impact guns and broken plugs are very infrequent. Never damage the threads taking them out that way, the only head damage I've seen has been caused by improper attempts at removal of the broken plugs.
Certainly do not put them back in with an impact wrench - also apply anti sieze to the smooth metal area near the bottom of the plug for the next guy.
No I was not talking about your new coils - they should be fine if you got quality. I see it all the time though, replace spark plugs then a month or two later the rig will come back with a miss and 1 or 3 dead coils - always seems to be 1 or 3, never two haha. Generally see them coming back 30-40% of the time - not much we can do about it except suggest replacing all 8 coils when we do plugs - which from us is not cheap.

With the tool, it's not that big of a deal or that difficult. Sounds and looks more intimidating then it is.

Photos for y'all......
My friend John broke 3 of 'em in his Mariner recently!!:argue:
Silly design but some say they work well and change them at half the recommended mileage interval!! Also, use a magic anti-seize!!

I bought the OTC tool for $50 at the same time I ordered the plugs! I've heard enough stories.. Didn't end up needing it though.

There are a lot of Youtube videos on this. I started looking in to this when the dealership wanted $500 to change the wife's sparkplugs.

I only broke one without an impact gun at 95k miles. But I was lucky. Also had no issues with the coils.

No your not. I've read of countless dealerships quoting up to $800 for plugs and install. Total racket.

Tool showed up today. Took almost 3 hours to get the 6 broken plugs out and replaced. All back together and seems fine. Pretty sure some pieces made it into the combustion chamber, but no funny noises!
Tool works really well! Glad that's over!

Lisle tool? They are the ones we use here at the dealer, despite having the Ford tool because it sucks.
1/2 hour each is about right for extraction.

Yes, Lisle 65600. Works very well. My hats off to the folks that come up with these tools!
Had one that was stressing me. Was pulling the cut threads, by the time it finally released the tool threads were buried way down in the cup. If it doesn't start talking to you, you better go back and tighten the tool back down in again. Was using one of those extender ratchets to, so the handle was ldk 15 inches long? Thought the tip might break off the tool! Had to do that about 4 times on this particular plug. The others were cake.
Also pulled the ecm and bracket out for better access.
