For California Marauder owners:
Have you installed a complete exhaust system (headers, high-flow cats) and passed CA smog?
If yes, please share the details.
a. Kooks, Stainless Works, not a complete system (cat-back only), etc..
b. a special tune that leans out the engine to the point you can pass CA smog. Then reload a standard or go-fast tune afterwards.

I haven't but wanted to I deal with a lot of smog shops on a daily basis and consider them friends and even they tell me there's no way even with the new way they do smogs, I will not pass the inspection process.

emissions related questions do not get the best, if any replies. It is a potential law breaking topic most will not enter into on the internet.
try svt Cobra forums, they have similar issues and more cars to help get answers.
I live in a similar state, and got mixed answers. Some guys say they go right through, others return thier car to stock in order to pass after failing attempts.
good luck!

I think my ignorance is moving toward naive. Nonetheless, I appreciate you explaining the sensitive nature of my questions.

All I have is a tune and a CAI. The CAI is a K&N, carb approved. My tune is from Zack. No issues so far ...
I would love to remove two cats, but have been told I will fail inspection.

Why?
If you think you'll fail a visual inspection, I bet most "inspectors" don't know there should be 4 cats.
I highly doubt you'll fail a "sniffer" test.

California no longer does sniffer testing. The problem would be the visual upon seeing the headers and not having to carb number stamped on them.

And stainless steel headers would stand out like a neon sign. I need ugly, old looking, new headers. Damn.

I thought Brian tried to pass with some headers. I think he tried to do the smog referee but can't remember how it turned out. I thought JBA Headers used to have some shorty headers that were generic enough in the CARB number information to be available for Ford passenger cars with 4.6 L 281 engine. But I could be wrong. Maybe call them? But I think I heard the performance gains were not worth the effort.
