A. Axle seal
B. brake fluid
Just a guess
Have someone stand on the brakes and watch to see if fluid is coming out.

If it's an early 03 build probably both.

Mechanic won't know till he tears into her, if the axles seal surface is worn she'll need new ones.
Check for brake fluid leaking first, don't get ahead of yourself.

Does it smell like gear lube? which is rather pungent smelling..if it does, then axle seal, which might mean axles as well as bearings/seal etc.

That's a judgement call..I can't answer that..if it is really throwing it out, then maybe not..if it is just a small leak, should be ok..make sure rear diff is full, but not overfull. Also, could be a chance you will need to do the rear brakes if the gear lube gets on them.. if the rear rotors/drums ok,brakekleen and then just a pad change as the lube will penetrate them and cant be cleaned. don't forget the ebrakes too as they are shoes.

Its gear oil leaking out.
It should make it if you top off the pumpkin with fluid. Edit: you can't do that with sock cover! I'd strongly suggest new axles, that way you pay labor only once... You should be able to pick up locally.
Did you get new seals and bearings with your ring and pinion?
good luck!

Yes, can you get them locally before you go to your installer?

Rockauto has them for 87 each... Looks like you'll be missing your install.
Next you'll probably find out your t-lok unit is toast... Didn't I suggest you do it all??? ;) It is cheaper if you do it right the first time.

It is never just the seal.

Look on the MFG. sticker on the inside of your drivers door jamb and if it was built in 2002, you could have the axle issue. Build dates of 2003 and up are safe from this.

Another suggestion is to buy online preferably at Advance Auto Parts and use a discount coupon from Brads deals. Then pickup in the store. I save a lot of money this way. Hopefully they stock them

Try any NAPA store. If they don't have them in stock they can usually get them the next day.

NAPA Axles did NOT Work for me, stay away from them. The set I bought were made in India and were not properly heat treated. Lasted less time than the bad stock axles.

The NAPA axles are sourced from Dorman.

This is why I think very carefully before "saving money" on auto parts from some wanker who has outsourced to the lowest bidder. They *never* stand behind their junk and you get to do it twice. Not much of a savings. Even if I do the labor myself, I still value my time and am willing to pay more for parts that actually work. Although Ford and their vendors are not beyond reproach when it comes to parts quality, generally they have a strong incentive to ensure their suppliers are building something that will last.
The last time I bought anything other than oil from NAPA was when they sold me a TRW water pump for my '89 Grand Marquis that failed after two years. One guess as to whether they warrantied it. :mad2: That was 15 years ago, I haven't been back.
All those cheap auto parts jokers can go pound salt as far as I am concerned.
