A mechanic I was talking to is under the impression changing to 4.10 gears will mess up the over drive. Anyone know what he's talking about?
Thanks.

Only if you don't get a tune for the 4.10 gears, the trans will shift wonky as if it still has 3.55

get the tune and then install them so you can download it right in there when done.

No tune = tranmission shifting problems
Tune = goodness!

Many "old-school" mechanics think 4.10 is some sort of mystical extreme ratio to be feared. They would be right if we were talking about my '68 Buick with a 3-speed auto, no O/D and 14" wheels. On a modern car with a 4-speed O/D, 18"wheels and an OHC engine, 4.10 is perfectly reasonable.

And for these reasons if your mechanic thinks the 4.10s are an issue for these cars, I suggest putting your Keds on and walking to the next shop.

Has anyone used this kit and was told different shims/extra needed to be ordered? It's only 40 bucks but I was under the impression EVERYTHING was included.

3 yellow markings (dots/lines?) were mentioned on the shims he needed.

You can reuse the shims already installed, if needed.
You don't need the gasket, use RTV silicone instead.
You should use 70W140 fluid instead.

He said the shims already installed were slightly concave, does that make sense?.
I'll be using the fluid with the kit for the break-in. I have 3 bottles of 70W140 ready after that.
Thanks FBM!

If they are concave that's not good, they should be flat.

I'd also replace the bearing cap bolts with studs ... like these:

Also a good time to install a new cover with bearing support.

Red Locktite for all fasteners.
Might want to have bearings and seals for the rear axles, just in case.

Unfortunately I did not get the studs. I did get the below cover.
Ford Mustang 8.8 Differential Cover Rear End Girdle System. Also did get the axle bearings & seals :)

I am not a fan of the "pak of thin shims" (just examine your concave shims for my reasons). I prefer to do the math & get the 2 single-piece shims needed for the job from Ford. Just my :twocents:
