Well, with my '74 Z28 Camaro project wrapping up, I decided it was time to start looking for my next project. I had my sites set on a 77-81 Z28 or Trans Am. A couple of weeks ago I spotted a nice '78 Trans Am.

Pat, a great member of our forum, agreed to go look at the car for me and he gave it the thumbs up!

So, I began negotiating. We reached a deal over the weekend so yesterday I sent one of my auto transporters to pay and pick up the car from Texas. He picked it up last evening and will be dropping it off at my home shop around dinner time tonight.

I figure I will tag and insure the car and then drive it around some before I decide what exactly to do with it. I have always wanted one of these cars and am super excited. I cannot wait to see it in person!

Car loaded up and headed to its new home:

And a few pics of the car as it sat when I found it:

Wow beautiful car! And in really great shape! I'm undecided on the color but it's a T/A so it's all good. I would be half afraid to do anything to it since it is in such nice shape buuuutttttt, I hear pro-tour/resto-mod with the oversize snowflake wheels and built suspension. Ohhh the possibilities. :banana2:

Great looking car. One day I'd like to find a '75 - '77 Formula.

Just for you Marty I'll dig around and find some gold chains for you to hang on the rear-view mirror. And a bottle of Polo you can spray on the carpets to give it that correct era smell.

I had a brand spanking new '78 black T/A, a '78 white T/A, and a '78 formula 400. They were California equipped cars (all smogged out) and the T/A's always overheated if you played with them too much. The formula was my favorite, but it was plain jane. What a blast from the past. They were the best looking cars of those years.

Good looking example of what used to be a common car.
I imagine you focused on getting a rust free body, which is super important.
The other parts common to be beat are the dash pad, the rear side plastics and sail panels, which look good in your car. Even the seats look decent!
Having owned, restored several of the gen 2 T/A and Formula - I'm happy to see the traditional Pontiac engine :)
78 was a transitional year to include the Old's 403 in a T/A which is getting more common to find in the nicer cars.
I know you'll be swapping that out for an LS9 or something, so I almost wish you got a 403 car ;)
I'm looking forward to what you do to it Marty, it will be a nicer car after you get through it.

Oh, and this was the best vehicle from 1978I had access to one of the J series trucks at a farm I worked on as a youngin'. Try as I might to get that thing stuck it always trudged through whatever I drove it into. Spartan interior, but a 4wheeling monster. :)

Amen to that. In CT 1978 had a major ice storm, my brothers J10 with sport package and my bosses Golden Eagle made it places police could not get. And a few Fords stuck in mud, well, the J10 just lugged them out.
QuadraTrac was amazing for the era. And, the nicer trucks had a T/A style interior! brushed dash, 3 gauge pod, 3 spoke wheel, buckets seats and arm rest. See images. They were car/trucks, and drove the road / cornered awesome. 360 or 401, TH400, Dana rears....

Well, when the car was delivered last week.

I was a bit disappointed with the condition of the paint although the overall contain of the car was very good. It became clear to me that the pictures presented in the sale ad for the car were three years old. When I was negotiating to purchase the car, one of the pictures showed a registration sticker that was from 2012. I specifically asked the seller about this and he told me that the pictures were current and that the car was just being driven on expired tags. This was a lie and when I got the car it had a current tag on it - demonstrating that the seller lied.

At this point, having had one of my drivers make a 1,300 mile roundtrip to go get the car, there was not much I could do except try to improve the paint. So, on Saturday the guy that handles the cutting and buffing on our cars came to my home shop and worked his magic on the car. I also put the 17" Snowflakes on the car.

I think the results were very good but now I need to lower the car so my net step will be to order lowering blocks for the rear and tubular A arms for the front.

Here are some pictures as the car stands now:

Actually, the 6.6 decal was on both 400/403 powered cars.
the fifth VIN digit Z denotes Pontiac 400, along with instant visual confirmation loooking at the engine. Easiest = Olds motors have a front mount oil filler pipe - not on Poncho or Chevy powered GM cars.

The 403 Olds was a better motor than the Pontiac, which has numerous weaknesses.

My first hot rods were Pontiacs, '71 LeMans Sport 350, then a '70 GTO I got without a drivetrain. My buddy had a '68 Firebird with a 428. Cylinder head flow wasn't that great, but the worst was the enormous crankshaft main bearing journal on 400ci and above. The bearing speed was too high and they would spin bearings.

I loved those cars, especially the GTO. They are why I own a Marauder today, as they are similar chassis cars. But I put a 454 Chevy rectangle port in it.

You hit 2 of 3 general design flaws. The head flow by other engine standards, is low in CFM, even port volume in CC's.
But, that has been easily remedied with specific valve seat angle and short turn radius / bowl blending.
So, a mild port job on standard cast iron heads yield tremenous gain. What the heads did do, by design, is promote port velocity. Those 'small' runner ports on fairly large (400/421/428/455) engines made torque. Gobs of it. That was the Pontiac upper hand.
Another good thing on most heads was standerd equipped screw in studs and stamped steel pushrod guide plates. No need to machine for those needed things, like most 'other' brand engines.
The main bearing journal issue you mention is on the 421/428/455 blocks = 3.25" journal
It was a large mass of area to lubricate, and oil routing was wrong. Main journals were fed by holes in the cam bearings!
400 and smaller blocks all shared the same, stronger 3" main journal.
On the upside of this was interchangability! Cranks could be swapped within that 3" or 3.25" journal family. Rods on ALL 55-79 V8 were the same dimensions, so hi perf rods can be swapped, and piston pin height was the same between small/big journal engines.
Today, you can put a 455 crank into a .060 bored 400 block with standard rods, .030 455 pistons and have a 474" torque monster :D
Heads 65-78 ALL interchange, within compression ratio requirements. So put a regular 400 low compression head on top of that 474" short block, and you just made 500-600 lb/tq in the 9.5:1 compression range with stock, garden variety parts.
Last design flaw, I feel, were the valve springs.
How many guys back in the day revved their GTO thinking it was a small block Chevy, and floated the valves/broke the entire engine.
RPM had to be limited to 6000 on the high side, unless you went in and matched good aftermarket springs.
Otherwise, design goodies, like - intake manifold seperate from lifter cover tray kept hot oil away, and allowed intake swaps with only gaskets - even the distributor could stay in.
Harmonic balancers came off without a puller, flywheels were zero balanced, and the external block dimensions and bolt locations were the same - 326 through 455!
Intakes, covers, distributors, pumps, cams, it almost all swaps!
Man, we could swap parts on the cheap with a Pontiac.
Last, I scored several cars from guys that put a 454 square port, 350/350 horse small block, yada-yada, thinking they made their Pontiac 'better'.
They just didn't figure out how to make Pontiacs run, and went the easy route. Should have bought a Chevelle if your engine is orange
I'm teasing, it's alot like Marauders as you said - this mod motor is too much for some, and they take a lower cost/less ability demanding route.
I'm happy you had some nice Pontiacs, I'm sure many reading Marty's T/A thread did as well.
Peace.

You hit 2 of 3 general design flaws.

Yeah, I remember all those characteristics you mention. If you work at it you can make darn near anything go fast.

I like to think I'm pretty objective when it comes to cars and not too much of a brand fan boy, although Pontiac will always have a place in my heart. The GTO had no motor when I got it, and looking at it with an objective eye there is no comparison between the 454 Chevy and 455 Pontiac. But I have seen plenty of fast Pontiacs at the dragstrip.

I've owned both, cammed 454 and 455, both in A body cars. If the 455 is matched with the right convertor and gear, it will out run a 454 dollar to dollar.
Until recently, you could not build a Pontiac for the same money as a Chevy, so back then, yes = 454 made sense.
Look at Street Outlaws - fastest street car in the nation = Pontiac!
I built this, low compression, .030 455, ran 10.32 in full interior street trim. Dipped into the 9's with stock leaf springs, traction bars and stock front suspension.
I'm hoping Marty stays Pontiac when the bug bites to modify his beauty T/A the thread is about!

Hey Mo that's a good-looking Trans Am almost looks like the color of Jim Hand's Pontiac lemans station wagon here in Missouri...

If you ever decide to build that Pontiac motor up it's got those 6x-4 heads on it I hear they flow just as good as 670 heads, just not all the compression! Good for 93 octane :)

I grew up around Pontiacs ever since I was born, my dad's first car 67 firebird bought in 1970 we still got it. Sitting in my stable is his 67 and my 68.

turbobryan - nice g body cars!!

Marty - the whit over red is a favorite of mine.
the body colored tail bezels looks 75-76 vintage.
It's a sweet looking roller, go to town with an LS in there!

I'd still love to see you do a Pontiac motor in the red one.
Jim Hand's wagon that Bryan mentioned paved the way for stock block/cast iron head 4400lb Pontiacs to hit 11's on pump gas in street trim back in the early 90's.
Qjet, low compresion, real mild stall and a wagon!
Jim Butler surpassed his mark, and grew huge from the mid 90's to now.
His hand ported cast iron heads on a 455 I had made 600fwhp in 94, on 93 octane, streetable power.
Someday, I'll convince you to try Poncho ;)
His engine/twin turbo is in Big Chief's Crow GTO

White with red guts is one of my favorite combos and always has been so this was a GREAT find for me.

I like the tail light bezels body colored and it sets it off against my Ember Mist Car which has black bezels.

Doing this car with the LS motor will allow me to keep the Ember Mist car as a Pontiac. In fact as part of the trade, i also am getting a fresh carb that I will use on the Ember Mist car.

They closed down that track Jim Hand raced at like 3 years ago, I moved to this house to race more often, but the track sold to the city

I met him thru the heart of America Pontiac club when I was less than 10, I'm almost 40

That wagon with all pontiac parts beat mopars Chevys ect, weekend after weekend. It ran 11.7 at 114 in the 80s. High 10s with Chevy parts in a Pontiac block

One of his sons built my th350 for my first car for 50.00 :) and it never broke

You hit 2 of 3 general design flaws. The head flow by other engine standards, is low in CFM, even port volume in CC's.
But, that has been easily remedied with specific valve seat angle and short turn radius / bowl blending.
So, a mild port job on standard cast iron heads yield tremenous gain. What the heads did do, by design, is promote port velocity. Those 'small' runner ports on fairly large (400/421/428/455) engines made torque. Gobs of it. That was the Pontiac upper hand.

Exactly chief alot of guys with pontiacs didn't know how to drive them. Pontiacs make most of their horsepower at a low rpm around 5500. I'd rather have the pontiac 400 than that generic/corporate 403. The pontiac 400 is overall a stronger motor than the olds 403.

Well, this week I took possession of 1 MO TA and I am very excited to get started on this project.

I have already ordered a ton of parts and the motor is off to the machine shop so that we can get started with the installation in a couple of weeks.

Here is the car as it was delivered. Don't worry about the flat looking paint, the paint is completely fresh and new and is in the process of being wet sanded and will then be buffed.

I am beyond excited about this project.

The TA had a bad crack in the dash. Getting a new dash fir the car was looking to difficult and expensive. Not too mention getting one in Carmine Red was never going to happen.

An alternative was to hire a dash repair service which is what I did. The before pictures show a prior owner's bad attempt at a repair. The Coke can is to give scale to the extent of the damage.

I am thrilled with the results and would recommend this over a dash repair.

I need a really good (bolt in place) tilt column either in Carmine or Black. I've got a very good straight column but my figure calls for a tilt.
give me a day or two for that.
the 79-up metric columns are easy, but 70-78 tilts a bit harder to find.
I know a guy......

BTW - if you want the best 'turn key' solution, I've bought an F body and an A body GM tilt column from here, and quality was of near 100% show and perfect fit & function.
If you are investing in the car for long term driveability and resale = WINNING!

Excellent!

Is the Camaro column cosmetically the same as the TA column?

Excellent!

Yes.
I believe when I puchased them, listing was specific to Pontiac.
However, the tilt lever ends might be a bit different in shape/texture (he only supplies new tilt lever), yet the harness pinout will be the same.
I'd call to order - he can likely set you up pure Poncho for the same price, or confirm the Camaro unit is virtually the same.
I'm old and this stuff was long ago...
After 2 weeks searching, finding $150 used columns with no keys or levers, it was an obvious choice ;)

It is a 1961 Pontiac Bonneville conv.

The interiors between the Bonneville and Catalina are vastly different.
The Bonneville conv. is the only Pontiac with a leather interior.

Most of those cars with long doors would wear out the hinges and strikers. I'm sure you (or somebody) rebuilt them.

Indeed. The more rust free a body, the more likely to have solid door alignment in my years.
Door drop is easily remedied though.
That car looks solid and well aligned from my house!
I'm having major Pontiac withdrawl, Marty :depress:

I generally cut corners on most of my builds. Those hinge pin kits would have put me over the top on this build.

Exactly.
The blue 76 I went too far, my last 78 and 76 before, those were both original engine, rust free. Can't mod them up.
I'd need a nice low cost T/A or GTO clone, or a LeMans - 'cuz must be Pontiac powered to stay Chief455 ;)
This little 65 was just a ported stock iron head 455 with hydraulic cam, full exhaust and interior, ran 12.86 on BF Goodrich Radial T/As. Power steering, fast ratio T/A steering box, big sway bars. All you need in a toy.
If I just didn't sell them all away like old girlfriends...:shake:

What did you do to the rear suspension?

Lowered 1 inch and added Hotchis shocks. I also did a disc brake conversion.

Other than the keyed lockout mine is identical. And, as you can see, they call it both the "Dual Gate" and "His and Hers."

I see you found the 'his and hers' reference for a 68 GTO (to my point)

I'll mail you $1 if you find the Trans Am Hurst Dual Gate shifter advertised as such. :D
I think it's because girls weren't allowed to buy a T/A or something

All joking aside, you nailed the stance - I was never able to do that with stock rear springs.

The dual gate on the TA was a Day Two option.

This is the third F body we've done in two years so we have the formula figured out.
