I was talking to a friend recently and he mentioned that in our cars when changing the oil you should use a specific Ford oil filter. He says it has some sort of check valve in it to hold pressure in the timing chain area for start ups.
Any truth to this? I have searched and don;t see anything about it. Just wondering, because if it is true I haven't been doing it that way.
Thanks,
Glenn

They have an anti drain back valve so the oil in filter won't drain dry when sitting . FL820S is the filter

I think I read something about an issue with leaking at the oil filters? Do you also need to purchase a special seal for these filters? Or am I confusing it with something else?

Oil filters don't leak unless your a complete idiot when you install it.
FL820S is all you need.
Sometimes the oil filter adapter gasket might leak.

I checked and you should use a FL820S.

He says it has some sort of check valve in it to hold pressure in the timing chain area for start ups.
Any truth to this? I have searched and don;t see anything about it. Yes, it's true, but it's not exclusive to Ford filters.
The Motorcraft FL820S does have this "check valve"...it's called an ADBV: anti-drainback valve. But so does every other filter specified for this engine. The difference is that the Motorcraft filter has a silicone ADBV, where most are nitrile rubber. Silicone is better because it doesn't deteriorate as quickly and remains flexible longer, thereby doing its job better. Look through the outer ring of holes (the inlet) and you'll see the ADBV...orange-red is silicone and black is nitrile.
The other major difference is the location of the bypass valve (not the same thing as the ADBV). The bypass valve allows oil to flow around the filter when the pressure differential across the media is above a certain value. This can occur during high-RPM use (especially with cold oil), and when the media gets clogged. Ford specify the BPV to be at the threaded (or base) end of the filter, so the bypassed oil doesn't wash across the dirty side of the media. Most other filters have it on the dome (closed) end.
Since both of these features are more expensive or more complicated to implement, Ford must believe they are of value to specify them in their filters.

I use Mobil1 2w-20w or 5w-30w But Mo's is rebuilding my motor so will have to see what they say about break-in and then what having it S/C also.

If you pour it onto the roof it will drain to all appropriate areas. They do it in NASCAR.
