I want to replace the stock unit with a high performance unit capable of handling, say 200 amps.
Which alternator does you recommend?

Is there a down side to running a more powerful alternator if you don't need the extra power immediately?

Are our cars sensitive to the pulley installed?

[QUOTE=Zack;1440283]Is this a serious question?[/QUOT after my eaten install a stereo system and HiDs. Is it not wise to use a 130 amp alternator?
Yes it will work. All links are of OUR alternator.

When I bought the Power Bastards alt, it came with a non-freewheeling pulley. I'm sure the others are the same way.

Absolutely not.

This is a good question. A high output alternator will have a solid pulley of smaller diameter to help extract more power. These have a tendency to squeal when the transmission shifts and rapidly decelerates the alternator. The one-way clutch on the factory alternator is there for a reason.
I pull a pop-up camping trailer with my Marauder. It has a powerful electrical system that in it's current configuration can draw up to 30A for the battery charger and refrigerator. I could increase the battery charging current in the trailer for a total of 50A. With this in mind I bought a Mechman 230A alternator. Deep cycle battery charging is constant high current and is considered to be the most taxing demand on an alternator.
As we were pulling into Yellowstone National Park 900 miles from home the one-month-old Mechman alternator gave out. I was furious. It took me two days to get an O'Reilly alternator into the park from 90 miles away. The O'Reilly alternator has been on there ever since. I don't know if it would handle a 50A load, but it has been supplying the 30A trailer load just fine. The Mechman failure turned out to be the regulator, which is actually a Ford part.
I would say if you don't need a high output alternator, don't get one. The parasitic drag is lower and the accessory drive smoother with the OEM clutched pulley. By the way, those clutched pulleys (and alternators, for that matter) don't last forever and can get noisy when they are old.
Edit: supercharger accessory drive setups that spin the alternator backwards obviously can't use the clutched pulley.
