View Full Version : Leaks on Leaks

Well, after some research on one of my leak issues, it seems to me that the oil filter adapter gasket is probably leakin. I've got oil wetness all over the adapter and surrounding components, not just under the filter so I'm pretty positive it's not the ol "check to make sure the rubber gasket came off the old filter" deal.

Secondly, I've been seein some drops here and there on the underside of my transmission lately. Def tranny fluid, nice and red. Not sure where it's comin from. I did a pan drop and filter change a few weeks ago, but it's been leakin since before that. Don't think it's the gasket or pan.

I'm gonna post pics of both and see if some of you with more experience can chime in and confirm or suggest what's goin on.

As far as the tranny leak, there's some little yellow plastic piece in one of the pics at the top of the housing. Bolt that goes through was a tad loose. Will post pics of the other places where fluid has accumulated.

I appreciate the help in advance. Apologies for some of the orientations of the pics.

the plastic piece is just a plug with an o-ring
easy to replace and the leak will stop

Interesting. Thanks for the p/n. However, there seems to be quite a few places where fluid is collecting, including on the side of the tranny housing opposite the plug. Is that little plug a common problem? If I pull the old one off, will I need to drain fluid first?

Glad to help out, bothered me for awhile till I did some investigating and found out how easy it was to fix.

Oil very slowly migrates out of that hole while driving and over everything. . .
No need to drain anything. You may just be able to replace the o-ring.
The p/n shown contains the plastic plug with the o-ring attached,
good luck!

Ok, so I replaced the plug piece at the top of the bell housing. Wetness and leaks around that general area seem to have ceased.

However, I'm still seeing some tranny fluid near the bottom of the housing where it is supported and bolted to the support piece shown in the pics. The bolts on the underside are collecting drops of fluid. I have no clue where it could be comin from or why it would leak from that area.

There seems to be some rubbery material attached to the underside of the transmission mount (see caveman depiction of the location of the material in the picture below). A chunk of this material ripped off when I was cleaning around it.

Everything above the depicted areas is dry. I'm clueless as to what it could be. Need help on this one! [emoji120]

Bump. Anyone? Really itchin to figure this out. Could it be the tail shaft to bell housing gasket? Anyone had problems with theirs?

Cracks in the tailshaft are so common on 4R70's that most dealerships stock them and their gasket.

Could also be the tailshaft seal.

Well....crap. I really hope that isn't the case. Is this a difficult fix w/o a lift? Do you lose a lot of fluid?

I don't think it's the tailshaft seal. Everything seems to be dry around there. Seems to only be wet around the transmission mount, which is right under the area where the tail housing mates up with the bell housing.

I'll have to check everything over once again and make sure I'm seein everything. Pretty frustrating seein as I'm dealin with the oil filter adapter gasket leakin right now as well :shake: :mad2:

Besides the cross member that I "think" needs lowered or removed no, quite simple actually. Maybe a quart or less comes out.

But removing that crossmember..... Lol good luck! If you have to remove it, my advice is to take it somewhere that has a lift.

TRUTH!

When I had my torque converter replaced, the trans shop told me it should only take 6 hrs when I dropped it off in the morning, well I didn't get the car back until the following afternoon cause they said the crossmember was a real PITA to get loose and out.

Mine took 30 seconds to remove! And to think, all these years worried about it from reading the hardships.

Get this and don't break a sweat.

What am I supposed to do with that thing? Pry it loose once the bolts are off? Grr...this is soundin more and more involved...

EDIT: just read some other posts on the removal of the PITA cross member. Fan-freakin-tastic. Welp, guess there's no gettin around it. Would this be required even just to get the extension housing off?

I can't remember if it clears or not. But yes, if it won't clear, pull the bolts out and slide this between the cross member and the perch it bolts to.

Been there done that , tail shaft isn't going to clear unless you drop the Xmember , tow it to a trans shop , unless you have a lift , its not happening on jack stands.

I did mine with jackstands, I had six 12 ton jackstands under the car. And I thought for sure it was gonna drop on me and kill me with how hard I had to pull on that crossmember.... Never again.

Yeah when i took mines to the trans shop they used a 5 foot pry bar , the guy was literally hanging off the bar , i thought the car was going to fall off the lift! lol

My trans re-builder said it took over an hour to get mine out and he ground a few thousandths off it before re-installing with GREASE on it for next time!!

Said he'd never had that much trouble and he's done dozens of CV's!!

I had a 5' pinch bar and worked my way around with the bolts removed to get the cross member out of my parts car. A lift is a must! It's a major PITA

*sigh* :depress: Looks like I got some work to do. Feels like my car is takin a crap on me lately. First, I found out the oil filter adapter gasket needs replacing, been leakin coolant and oil around that spot. Not to mention, I did a coolant flush 15k ago. Now I'm figurin out I probably need to change the tranny extension housing gasket, or the the actual tail housing or both to stop the leaks and it's gonna be a PITA to do. Here's to doin your own work... :violin:
