View Full Version : Engine ticking

Hey Gang-
This ticking noise reveals itself during normal operating temperatures. My guess is the timing chain guides because I do have the rattling noise at start up but while its warming up, there's no ticking. I did manage to find a video on YouTube of a marauder with the same noise but the poster did not post a solution. Any advice would truly be appreciated.

I almost drove off the road last night from the "bleached" response thanks to you lol but I plan on ordering the parts then I would get back to you.

Make sure it's coming from the timing cover before you order all the parts.

DO NOT CONTINUE TO DRIVE YOUR CAR! If those timing chain guides are loose, destruction is eminent. Ask Steve what happens if you keep driving it....can you say all 32 valves?

I've driven it a couple of times but after reading this, it will stay parked till I'm ready to fix it.

yeah your right about that. when i got my first marauder. thats what every one was saying its your timing chains so i replaced all that still had the tick, so pulled the engine had both the heads done with new guides put it back in still had the tick! so a guy told me about the cam so replaced thoes. and tick was gone. you couln't tell the cam was bad by looking at it. in the engine when running it ticked.

Will do man. I have the parts in checkout now so I'm ordering them tomorrow asap. All I needed was an installer and Big booty up top said he's available to do it so that's the route I'm taking.

Got in it today to go to lunch and when I started it sounded like somebody was shaking a can with rocks in it. It smoothed out for a few but then as I was driving it got louder. Checked the oil it was none on my dipstick..put oil it in and on the way home the noise got louder and louder..pulled over at a gas station and popped the hood and it was sounding like the cam is hitting against the covers or something sounds terrible..and now I'm heart broken. Any advice where I should get an engine?? I'm in fort Washington, MD...

If valve guides are a problem it should manifest as oil consumption, maybe smoke at startup or deceleration, and you should be able to see it on the spark plugs. In my case I did not find any of these issues. Plugs were still clean after 70K miles, no smoke and minimal oil use.
I've been getting a rattle between 3,000 - 5,000 RPM as the engine revs up. A couple times at an idle I caught it slapping the timing chain. Didn't do it often, but I though the sound was distinctive.
It is at the Ford dealer now getting an FRP timing kit put in it as well as new hydraulic adjusters. Hopefully that does it, it is a lot of $$ in parts and labor. Not really able to do it myself right now, too much else going on.
What is the 3-piece camshaft issue? Are they pressed together and then loosen up?

:agree:
I had the same prob,A tensioner that was ticking & a worn chain.
So I had everything replaced from MMR but UPGRADED Primary chain tensioners (left and Right) with CAST IRON instead of plastic with built in fail safe ratchet in case of oil pressure loss & added Comp Cams Stage 3 Blower cams.
Gotta love the lumpyness :D

Chains don't stretch
The chain that doesn't "stretch" has yet to be invented. Really it is wear at the link pivots. It is not as obvious to eyeball on a long, tensioned chain in a 4.6 and see wear compared to a cam-in-block small block Chevy or Ford. I'm sure you've seen a slack chain on one of these old engines.
For someone who seems to know cars you come up with some weird ones sometimes. Magic 4.6L timing chains that don't wear, suspension parts with an infinite life, etc. EVERYTHING wears, one just has to know what a reasonable lifespan is, what the symptoms are and when to change it out. Yeah, I'm putting all new chains in to go with the new guides and tensioners. No false economy here.

So Zack. Stupid question. But I assume you can install the guides and tensioners without messing with the chains correct?
CJ, where did you order parts from?
Thanks.

Rock auto. I ordered the metal guides as suggested but my tensioners are plastic but I was told no biggie. If you need the part #s, ill text them to you. Can't wait to see your insides too.

However, it may or may not booger the AC box insulation just a bit.
