View Full Version : 4.10 Gear Howl

So I made the jump to 4.10 gears. when windows are closed and radio off, I'm hearing a slight howling when I step off the gas. Tonight, while rolling downhill, sort of a purr, like a ricer speeding by off in the distance (which for a second, I thought it was). Not loud but noticeable.

I just reached 500 miles with the gears installed, haven't changed the oil yet. FM was added during install.

Is this common? Something not done right? Might changing the oil and making sure it's full possibly resolve the noise/problem? Any diagnostic help appreciated.

Thanks.

If your gears are howling the backlash is incorrect , and your gears aren't setup right , your gears should be quiet/silent.

Take it back to the shop -they should be quiet.

at this point you need to stop driving it, depending on how bad the backlash is set, they could be toast already.

Take it back to the shop. This is what Marty found on the rear end http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/03/e13cba5eb967d2da0039e2eca70ee7 fd.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/03/ec1eea4b12727b1782da437d7f18c5 1d.jpg. It could of been worst.

So wouldn't you know it, I get to the Dez Performance today, got the tech on the passenger side and went for a ride. Not a damn sound, could not get it to howl. I heard slightly once but he said it could be the tires. I left it there for my appointment Monday morning. Told him to take a ride and find some hills.

To be continued...

This was the result of me ignoring a gear whine.

Might have been Ray Charles.....

A little welding and grinding and you'll be back on the road

May as well have been. This was over 5 years ago, by the way.
