View Full Version : De-Reinharting my DBP

Comin' in Hot

The time has come to remove the last major component of my DBP miserable past. While I made HUGE improvements to the DR designed Vortech water to air setup to make it work really well, I want it gone from the car just because I get super pissed every time I see it and think how much I had to fix along the way to get the car back to where it should have been when Keith owned it. When I was purchasing the car, we both agreed the car deserved a Whipple. I finally am in the position to make it happen. More importantly, Our(Keith will always be an owner in my mind) marauder is ready for it. So here goes:

Showing the Whipple it's new home

I had an hour to kill so I starting taking stuff off

Everything DR related is gone except the aftercooler, it will have to wait until I remove the bumper cover.

The long block was the never used back up for Trilogy 1

The engine has stock 4V heads and cams, The bore is stock bore and the pistons are Diamond 19cc dish piston, a Forged crank and Manley I-beam rods. It was built with all ARP hardware (head studs, main studs and the Manley "I" beam rods come with ARP 2000 bolts) the head gaskets are Fel-Pro gaskets, marauder oil pan. The compression is around 8.5:1.

I'm not looking to push it more than 700rwhp and I'm told its good for about 800. If it blows up, the car will just sit longer until could afford to a 5.3 stroker.

The trans is a Lentech and I hope it holds up, and it has a 4" Dynotech DS and a fully built 8.8 rear.

great combo! 8.5:1 you should be safe boosting/timing toward 700, from what I've read.
I have stock Cobra short with ARP 2000 head studs, mild cams in stock freshened heads with a 2.3 Whipper. I'm only going for ~500rwhp.
Like you, this is back up to Eaton current :)
good luck, any DBP boosted = WINNING!

We are at 25psi with the 3.5 blower pulley and the 6.55 underdrive crank pulley. Be ready for some major boost and high IAT's. I would factor in at least a meth kit. A 4.0 blower pulley may be able to put the boost in check for the street.

Must install from the bottom. Because of the huge filter and MAF housing. You could probably get a smaller filter to fit the 5" pipe and weld a slot MAF bung right to the pipe.

Zack
05-07-2015, 08:52 AM
A 4.0" upper and a 6.55" lower will make 20psi.

Yes its doable, but a Meth kit is strongly advised, especially with the high loads from the heavy car.

If the injectors should ever need to be removed, the entire blower or crusher assembly needs to be removed.
Pay close attention to the clearance between the crusher inlet and PS fuel rail.
You may need to grind the inlet.

Also, this sounds crazy, but you can plumb the bypass into a wastgate and control boost that way too.
Its tough but doable.

I thought about that, in fact I had a lengthy conversation about that with my boss(his GN). He insists it needs a BOV, but my thought is that you can not blow off any air after the MAF because it's metered air.

It's going to be a return system.

80lb. injectors
Fore fuel rails
Fore fuel regulator
5lb. hobbs switch
-8 supply line
-8 return line(might go -6 different companies suggest different things)
Fore pump controller
twin pumps, I haven't decided yet I have one Aeromitive stealth 340 with less that 1000 miles on it, so I might get another.

I finally started working on my swap after a 4 month break. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to knock out the freeze plugs on the back of the heads with the engine in the car. I had to drop my exhaust which sucked because it's one piece from the headers back. The I removed the driveshaft and the trans crossmember. I let the trans hang while I knocked out the plugs with a 4' prybar. I installed a Cobra Engineering rear cooling mod and reassembled everything I had to remove to access the freeze plugs.

This week my plans are to paint the timing cover and install my replacement cam covers.

Looking good Derek. Keep on plugging away. It is not a race.

I finally swapped out my cam covers. Next up is to figure out the hoses for the rear cooling mod. I know the hoses coming off the heater core are 3/4" but the other end of the coolant return pipe to the water pump is smaller, I need to figure it out.

By the end of the weekend I hope to install the Cobra Engineering intercooler adapter and have the blower in place for good.

Just go in the back of Advance and dig around for the best fitting heater hose with 3/4" & 5/8" ends. There's always a perfect hose after you trim it up.

It's been forever since I updated this thread. I installed the cam covers that I had powder coated by Marty. I routed the heater hoses from the cooling mod to the heater core and then I let the car sit for a couple months.

I just wasn't happy this having a passenger side intake, I feel like it squashes everything on the passenger side and leaves the driver's side of the engine bay looking empty. I decided I was going to modify a GT500 crusher inlet to work in my car. Here are some quick reference pictures. The biggest problem is that the bypass location is different for the terminator vs the GT500. The rear lower portions are going to need to be cut out and swapped. The next problem is that all the sensors styles and locations are different. This will be addressed once the bypass issue is solved. The last problem is that I need to make provisions for the throttle cables because the GT500's throttle body is electronically controlled.

Another awesome Whipple thread, good job CIH!
Yes time REALLY flies when you're doing these projects, years can go by in a blink.

I must admit that I wouldn't attempt to splice the intakes like you are but I'm looking forward to seeing the end results! Hopefully you don't encounter any leaking or turbulence issues with the airflow.
