I have heard this loud clicking or tapping from under the center part of the dash. It does it when I startup, but not all the time.
Any ideas?

HVAC doors?

Most likely the blend door actuator.

Try running the EATC self-test, it might reset everything and end the noise.

Ok. Any idea on what needs to be done to repair it?

If running the EATC self-test doesn't clear it, you need to pull the dash to replace the actuator.

What Bob said....

It's a 3-4 hour job if done properly and the part from Ford is around $75.00 or less.

If you decide to use an aftermarket parts... Dorman, etc, it will fail sooner than an OEM Ford part and you will be replacing it again.

On my 08 MGM LS had same problem... I would just disconnect the battery then the door would reset it self. I would just use the A/C for cold never heat. everytime changed to heat that thump would start.

Ok found this

And the noise is there. So I guess I'm tearing into the dash :(

Gerry24, I pulled the battery cable off trying to get my key fob to work... That's another story. But no luck with the eatc

Did you get any codes after the self test?

Sounds almost like gear being stripped

You're going to have to get in there... where's noise coming from??? left, right,

Mattsmerc

Ok I think I found the problem. There is a gear driven actuator that I can put my hand on and feel the gears slipping.

While I had the EATC out I checked the o rings. A little dry so I used a lite coat of silicone grease

TIP YOUR HEAD TO THE LEFT AN YOU CAN SEE THE GEAR THING BETTER ;)

There is a gear driven actuator that I can put my hand on and feel the gears slipping. If it's got an electrical plug on it, then it's the blend door actuator. All the others are vacuum operated.

Vacuum hoses look ok to me. When you disconnected them did you hear a whistle??? If you did you have no leaks.

Does this look normal?Yes, there are only 5 vacuum lines...the empty port is supposed to be like that.

Have the o-rings been replaced?

Did you get any DTC's after running self test?

You need to replace the blend door actuator.

The o rings are orange. Not the normal on them is it?
The self test showed no codes. So that's good news.
Gerry 24 I pulled apart kinda fast and didn't notice the vacuum whistle.
Now on to the search of info of how to get that actuator out

OK!
All fixed. It looks as somebody else was there . They had a good idea too. take the ears on the driver and front portion and nip off the end so you can slide the unit into place. With those screws still in place but a little loose you can slip it in and tighten the one more to the passenger side. Total time: 1.5 hrs
