Check out this video and tell me what you think. I might try this on my hood. The body shop prices around here are outrageous. Too custom for them I guess.

Fast forward to the end if you don't want to watch the whole thing. I was amazed at the results.

What did the body shops quote you to paint the hood?

Plasti dip it until you can get a quality paint job on it.

The results at the end were good. Pretty self explanatory especially with the captions.....

I watched that and considered it.

I'll get a used hood at the boneyard before that.

Starting from scratch $1000 bare minimum plus $$$.

From where I repaired it, $600-1000, which really means $1000.

My last hood paint job including stripping it down to the glass and light fixings totaled $875.

Shrunk down crap in a year. Beyond aggravated with hoods.

Does rust oleum sell marauder black? Lol. I think you might as well use a spray can on the whole thing.

Spraying plastidip from a can seems like it would be harder to get a smooth finish than spray painting it. I suppose I could try it. Just peeling it off if necessary is a huge plus.

It's off a bit. I don't especially care. I'm also thinking about getting 3 or 4 cans of UA made. $25 each. Probably need more.

The plastidip won't match either.

Was it the hood or the paint job? Was that materials $$$ or a shop? No warranty?

Take it or leave it lol but the best spray paint I have used is dupli color engine enamel 500 degree gloss black. Lays down great! Will match better than the plasti dip and have used it on my dirt bike and holds up.

Hmmm.....that stinks.

I picked up a decent FoMoCo hood at the boneyard for $50 today. I wish I could have found a black one, but blue will do. I'm going to try the black plastidip crap on it. Now I can drive the car and take my time on the custom hood.

I'm going to go the enamel spray can, wait 2 weeks, buff with McGuiar's, clear coat and buff again route. Then I think I'll let it sit in the garage and dry until next spring.

I just did the enamel spray can on my daughter's Prizm. The front of the hood was peeling really bad. Plus, it was white, so I figured I couldn't screw it up any more than it was already. Prep is the big thing and do several thin coats of primer and then color. It came out decent (for what the car is) until she got into a fender bender.:shake: Now, here we go again, I need a hood!

I might have missed something here; but, my $0.02, if I were you, I would consider checking a local MAACO (or check Craigslist-Auto Services) for the MM before I would do the spray can route.

I went to Maaco once. Once and done. They are terrible.

I'm almost there. Going to try it. If it doesn't work out, I'll just prime it again and take it in to a shop. Simple as that.

I found each Maaco is a little different. But, I would think that no matter how good of a job the spray can does, Maaco (or the like) could still do better and save the time and aggravation...especially if you have to do it again. I got a quote to do my daughter's Prizm hood from a CL guy and he was going to charge me $100 if I brought him the hood. The MM hood might be a tad more since its bigger.

I'm on a quest and I don't give up easily. If the morons on youtube can make it look good, so can I. I have nothing to lose.

Then you would be laying down new paint over rattle can or rolled primer, paint, and now more primer. That certainly wouldn't hold up bud. That's why I had mine stripped by the shop. Most won't touch it if they are unsure of the base. Any good shop at least.

I've been there enough. Countless money and hours to achieve nothing like I visioned. No more for me! I'm done with that noise..

Whatever. I know my skills and what I can do. I want to try it. What's the worst that can happen? I sand it down and cover it with more primer. $10. The base is fine.

I may just buy a spray gun and a quart of UA paint if this doesn't work.

I'm going this route. The black paint gets HOT in the sun. I baked the hood in my garage with my propane heater as well.
