Interesting, but mostly known facts thanks to everyone providing videos and dyno results.
I'm glad he mentioned the higher pitched sound from the X can be altered by muffler choice as that is true. On my last system the X combined with my flowmaster delta 50's was HORRIBLY raspy!
I swapped over to Magnaflows (always disliked before) and all rasp was GONE throughout the entire RPM range. So it is not true when you read on here that X's automatically mean your car will be raspy...

^^^Think it's the overall design of Flows that give them the raspy sound.

good post for those that actually look at threads to learn ;)
I researched this in the 80's after seeing factory H-pipes on some of my Fords, and found the old school way to determine best location for the crossing pipe.

Yep, off-road x through flows is raspy. That's how all the mustangs around here are. Including my old SN95. I'm thinking H with Magnaflows on the MM.

AT some point I'm going back to an H pipe..I think it sounds better on these cars

X here with rear cats deleted, factory mufflers and resonated tips = excellent throaty sound without being over the top and No rasp.
In my case.;)

I'd always heard the most efficient place for a crossover pipe was as close to the engine as you could get it.

My car has an X with Flowmaster 40s and is a little higher-pitched than I would like, but not raspy at all. Mary's car has a custom H and Flowmaster 50s and sounds more like a V8 muscle car.

I tried a "Bryan Jones" X-Pipe and 18" Magnaflows first and did not like the high pitched "Zippy" sound the car made!!:shake:
Had a custom H-Pipe fabricated by Bryan and the sound is much lower with "Old Skool" burble......much nicer and I dare say I sacrificed much if any power!!
As the guy in the second video said it's all about sound and not power!!:burnout:

And now I have that x-pipe with Kooks headers and 18" Magnaflows and love the sound. Thanks again Jack for selling it to me all those years ago, lol. Exhaust note is such a subjective topic. What one person likes another may not. My brother loves the metallic raspy sound for his Mustang. I can't stand it.

Headers probably make the difference since I drove Todd's car with and X-Pipe and it sounded GREAT......mine not so great!!:shake:
Never thought about headers though...probably the difference and glad ya still likey!!

I've got Kook's , X-Pipe and 18" MaganaFlows as well.
When I punch it the car HOWLS!!!
Awesome sound, I like it...a little bit like a European exotic, but an H-Pipe would make it sound more like a muscle car.

I'd always heard the most efficient place for a crossover pipe was as close to the engine as you could get it.
from what I read years ago, they put light mist of paint on the inside of collector pipes for about 2', run a WOT pull and look for the prominent burnt area = put crossover pipe there.
I have found automatic trans cars this is usually about 18" from where the 4 header primary tubes merge.
I have not researched more modern methods ;)

Purely for sound? Could you tell any gain difference with x-h while driving

I have some vids from the track, but I don't have anything close up. I'll try and take some this week for you.

I'll stick to my H-pipe.
My exhaust guy was impressed with how evenly the heat coloring was at the crossover after I showed him this picture.

My X-pipe was a little loud for my taste, actually roared under throttle. I contacted Todd Fisher at Grand Muffler of Georgia (770-426-0763
toddfisher@grandmufflers.com
GrandMufflers.com). He had me install a Magnaflow Tru X-perforated muffler in place of the X crossover. Sounds much better now.

Think I'll go back to him and switch X for the H. Folks claim it's a "fake" X anyway, plus want more rumble.

Biggest difference was the drone in the car. H-pipe so much smoother.
I think I have some videos with sound from both... youtube OHZFAN if not, you might like the burnouts....

Nice clean install - I have this same setup. (Except for SW headers and 3" cats in the front) No rasp or drone.
I used this one: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/displayapplications.asp?partnu mber=14385 (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/displayapplications.asp?partnu mber=14386)

I spoke to Todd and he has sold his muffler business. I talked to him at length and he said that he has installed many X & H pipes on Marauders and they sound the same. He said the drone is related to vibration and flex couplers may help that typical 1800 - 1900 RPM drone.
