Since I am planning to be a long time owner of my Marauder it occurs to me that I might want to begin surplussing certain parts as they become available as used items.

I would like input from the gang about which ones I should be trying to get first and why. What are your recommendations?

Thanks,

Dan

Always nice to have a few spares hanging on the garage wall if you have the room.;)

While wearing both my engineer and seer hats, the following items come to mind...

Marauder Rims, Engine Parts (heads, blocks, etc.), and anything unique to the MM and NOT shared with other Ford models.

These MM rims will go the way of curb shots and potholes and owners will want exact replacements. Also there is the theft problem, which I suspect accounts for at least half of the rims currently on ebay!

These aluminum engines will not turn out the miles of their cast iron brothers, especially with our lead foot tendencies. This is simply inescapable.

Ford will not continue their noble experiment with aluminum blocks and heads
for the mainstream market after the soaking they will endure as we keep turning our engines in for warranty repairs and replacement. Even a gorilla has some learning ability.

I will certainly be looking hard at diagnostics just before my warranty ends with the object of getting a replacement engine.

The current record shows that one overheat episode (think thermostat) and the engine is toast! They just can't endure heat.

In the long run, if Ford wants to stay with aluminum, a redundancy will need to be built into the cooling system along with more capacity. Perhaps something more like aircraft engines. For $200 more per car this could be done, but don't hold your breath.

I bought the extended warranty (four extra years) based on my expectations, which I have shared here.

Here's an engine tranny combo currently on ebay:

There are also at least two sets of rims + stock BFG tires on ebay too.

Best Regards,

David

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if, many years and a hundred thousand miles or more down the road, I had to replace my aluminum engine with a cast iron block. Probably be time to build one up custom with all forged internals if you did, too. That way you could super charge big time. :)

I agree w/ 4th on the engine replacement. Aside from wheels, I would also keep an extra set or 2 of headlight, taillight, and parking light assemblies, especially if you are the owner of a "rare" color MM.

Just my .02

Interior pieces. I'm looking for a drivers seat myself. If you get rear ended the seat frame will be bent and the leather can wear. Floor mats. Console glove box lid maybe.

An extra steering wheel and dash cluster couldn't hurt either.

Tires. Lots and lots of tires.

Rear ones.

Oh, maybe a couple front ones too.

sounds like it would be cheaper just to buy another car to use just for parts.

except for when the same part breaks twice.

Above is what I did with my old GMs. A whole car, everything you'll ever need.

Unless something breaks twice, which is why I bought 2 spare GMs, for my 88.

Good luck

The floormats and the drivers seat leather. The will probably show the most wear.
