View Full Version : Trilogy installation in process

Hi all,
It's about time I found a weekend to get going on this project. thinking I had everything I need, I started yesterday around noon after a long night of graduation party.
By tonight around 7 I stopped for the weekend. Made it up to about page 96 n the Trilogy install manual. I say about because sitting here reviewing my progress I can't find page 95. I am held up with the alternator pulley swap and missing nuts to mount it which I will get done somewhere tomorrow.
So far it has gone fairly smooth. The head unit went on fully assembled which was a bit difficult, but in the end this saved a ton of time.
It will probably be until next weekend that I can say it is ready for the cranking tune, but we shall see what the weeknights bring.

Maybe you can find some pointers or hints on your install here http://www.thechicagogarage.com/forum/marauder-tech/129244-hybrid-trilogy-install.html
As usual, Musclemerec has some good details and pictures throughout the install.

Thanks for the link. There's some great info in here. I am following the original Trilogy installation, so some of this, like the FRPS mod will not be implemented. I don't know enough about this to include in my project. Need to look into that more.
Thanks again!

Got up to page 107 tonight (heat exchanger installation) minus a couple steps. Not sure which hose goes where on the intercooler coolant circuit so I need to sort those out. Doesn't help that I took the wife out for Italian, but that's one of those long term investments.
Will drop off the alternator tomorrw since I left it behind today. That's the other missing step. About 32 pages left to go!

Yes, Marty. That is the plan per the standard Trilogy set up. What is the issue?
We have found a high incidence of alternator failure when doing Trilogy installs/Eaton swaps and re-using the used alternator.
It may pay to just go ahead and get a new alternator. Then you will not have to worry about pulling the clutched pulley off the alternator. And, you may be able to sell your used alternator and make back some of your money.
Just some of my personal thoughts and observations. You're results may vary.

05-27-2015, 06:21 AM
ok, good to know. So that is the reason for the pulley swap? The original is clutched and the Trilogy pulley is not? I was wondering what the difference was. I will go with my existing unit. It's been sitting idle for most of it's life!

It worked. I am now complete up to page 112 with some jumps ahead. One thing I am unsure of is the alternator mounting. Instructions only cover two lower mounting bolts. What holds the top end?
Also, two wires going to boost gauge shown below. Which goes to which terminal?
Some pics.

Thanks. I thought this was part of the gauge. The Hobbs switch is there to trigger the BAP when you get to either 3 or 5 PSI of boost. It's just an on-off switch so polarity is not important.

Thanks guys. Great assistance as I had hoped would be here for me when the time came. As Marty predicted I am working from home today so I can try and wrap it up. I have the intercooler pump mounted and getting ready to wire it into the fuse box. I found taking the battery tray out was much easier than working from underneath. Of course I do not have a lift so was lying on pavement vs. standing over the top.

ok guys, I need some help. I have a few missing connections on the vacuum lines. From the rear of the blower I have two ports connected. One goes to passenger side PCV connection on valve cover. The other connects up to the EGR system. I think this is all good. Then on the passenger side I have a spare tube coming from the firewall (brake booster I think). The third connection on the rear of the blower is not connected ot anything.
On the driver side I have a tee which I think connects the CAI to the valve cover and ??
Then from the idle air control valve a tube coming rearward which is not connected. Don't know where this goes either.
I will be wiring the IAT2 sensor then will get back to this later. It will ne my final step other than a few parts to replace up front.

Another question. On the IAT2 sensor wiring, Trilogy instructions are a little unclear. I have connected the sensor to the two outer wires to the MAF. So the two wires which were cut are going nowhere. Is that correct?
justbob
05-28-2015, 02:12 PM
The two outer wires get snipped off the MAF and redirected to the IAT2 leaving the MAF with only four wires now.
As for the Vacuum lines, the manual was pretty clear on them and I don't recall all of the routing. I remember that there is two under the inlet. One goes to the back of the blower and the other goes to a tee in the line from the CIA to cam cover from what I recall.
The one from the fire wall is for the vacuum manifold.

If I understand your description correctly, yes.
The two wires that USED to go to the outer connections on the MAF should go to the IAT2. There should now be nothing connected to the 2 outer positions on the MAF connector.
*EDIT* justbob beat me to it...

After a full day of marauder yoga here is where I'm at. I re-soldered the IAT sensor so that's complete, battery is hooked up and the crank file is sitting in my inbox. Problem is the other day I spilled a cocktail into my laptop and it will not turn on. So I must actually go to work tomorrow and use my work computer to connect my tuner and get the crank file. Tomorrow night we will crank it, fill the coolant and look for problems.
Oh yeah, and I need an elbow to get that brake vacuum tube connected.

Mike, Yes that is my alternator positive lead. I decided to move it out of the harness behind the fuse box and run it across from the terminal with a short u-turn. I routed it beneath the blower pulley but will work on tidying it up a bit more. This avoided having to extend the lead. Thanks for pointing that out.
Bob, I don't have confirmed mileage on the kit. That auxiliary tensioner was very tight though! Will have to watch closely as this thing becomes road worthy.

Question about the accelerator spring. The one that came with my kit is much stiffer than the stock accelerator spring, so the pedal feel is much different. I prefer the softer pedal. Is it set up this way for a reason by the Trilogy team? I may just try the stock spring but if I the unit needs the extra strength to drop RPMs or some other reason I'd like to know before I go experimenting.

I don't think there's a real reason for the stiffer spring, if there is I can't remember why. Might just be that it's not worn in. You could try the stock one and see how it feels.

Actually, while swapping them out I found them to be exactly the same, so I guess the kit used the same spring. It sure has a different feel, but must be something besides the spring. I did notice the alignment of the cable is not as true as the original intake.

Greg, all of my I/M monitors are turned on so I can't say for sure. I know in MA you can have one monitor not ready, but I don't think you can have any turned off. They discovered that trick 3-4 years ago.

I believe PonyUp failed MA just for having headers and rear o2's off.

Took the car out for a short road trip this weekend and put on about 300 miles. It has a vacuum leak so it will be in for smoke test this week which will allow final tuning by Mo's. Have I mentioned how great these guys are? Responses to even my silly questions come back immediately. Tune files in response to data logs are super fast. Amazing support.
I also noticed a high pitched whine during my trip. Its a tough one for me since I have Tinnitus and my ears are generally ringing all the time at almost the exact pitch of this whine. tried some wd40 on pulleys and belts (not all) but no help. I plan to change the SC oil as soon as the syringe on order arrives, but I may give up on that and find one locally as it is on a slow boat from China. At least that will rule out one other obvious location. Also could be the vacuum leak mentioned I guess.
The car runs pretty strong considering I am still taking it easy until final tuning is complete. It is going to be a monster.
One issue on drivability is with the accelerator action. It is very tight and not a smooth transition as I depress the pedal. From very light pedal it makes a jump which feels pretty tight on the foot. Any ideas how to relax the pedal feel and smooth it out will be greatly appreciated!
I have. a business trip this week so won't get back to collecting data until next Saturday. here's an attempt to find the high pitch whine with video if it uploads.

I would check the blower tensioner pulley. Besides the blower, it is the only used one that you used correct?

There is one other which had to be changed from smooth to ribbed. It is the upper passenger side. I tried the wd on the blower tensioner and belt to see if it would change the sound. The other one I tried to hit while not running but I may need to try with better aim. Does that sound like a pulley to you?

Should have paid more attention to blocking that lower port during installation.
What port are you referencing?

Sounds like a healthy vacuum or intake leak whistle.
FYI, never use WD40 (anything petroleum based) on a belt. Will cause belt to deteriorate and promote slippage. Use silicone spray for any required diagnostics.

Thi was regarding the subject of removing the lower port on the intake in order to reduce oiling. I read a little about this during my install but not enough to make the change. A different subject really.

Thanks for the tip. If it is the vacuum leak we should find it with the smoke test.

This is correct, as long as it's working properly. You should be pulling ~20in.-HG.

Then what you hear is NOT a vacuum leak. If all that sound was a leak then you would be lucky to see 5.
Pick up a couple 6203 bearings and replace them in any suspicious pulley. You just need a few sockets a hammer or vice to drive them out, one or two may have a locking snap ring. Stupid easy. They all take the same size, the only one non serviceable is the small plastic one. Makes no sense swapping entire pulleys, especially when you don't know what cheap bearings they might have used.

Got the vacuum leaks smoked out today. JTL had sent an inlet tube with bad threads and the throttle body was evidently slammed during shipment. I should have had more to say about that as I had noticed something not quite right when I connected the cable but hey it's all good! Idles down nicely and the pedal feel is back to what I expected. Very big improvement. Also the EGR showed leakage so I have one on the way for the weekend.
Sadly, I am traveling through the end of the week. Saturday I will have my next retune waiting for me.
This trip I am taking for work. The laser time I went to this place I drove home this new Marauder. This time I will have an entirely new one waiting for me when I return.

You will need a firewire connector (IEEE 1394). I bought one for $5 off Amazon and snipped off the small end then used a beeper to figure out which pin connected to analog 1 & 2. There was a link somewhere with instructions. But if you buy the $10 pigtail from SCT you will save a lot of time. They have the colors identified for you.
Here is what I did:

So today we completed the tuning process. I was away for a few days and was thrilled to have Marty and his team's attention through the entire process today. It was great fun, taking the car through the wide open throttle data logging and checking performance. These guys are amazing to be able to do this from a distance. We encountered some concerns which were swiftly adjusted out of the equation. I had to adjust the boost-a-pump and Marty and Jeff did the rest. Car runs amazingly well and fast. Thanks MartyO!!!!!!

Well, I can finally say my Trilogy install is complete. Took a ride to MO's for some fine tuning and troubleshooting. Fluttering shift points quickly eliminated. Then the slamming torque converter lock was traced to the boost-a-pump switch mounted on the back of the boost gauge. I won't try to explain the details but as soon as Jeff bypassed it the view through my windshield brightened.
Marty and Jeff are great hosts and there are some sweet toys in and around the shop to drool over. My long drive home will be spent contemplating other things in my life vs. reverting my MM back to stock!

Keep in mind that the remote tune we did was very close to spot on and the visit was really related to getting his shift schedule tailored to him (much like what we did for you except for you we did the shift schedule tailoring remotely).
Turns out Greg's issue with the car was a mechanical one just as we suspected when we were doing our remote work.

I have driven Nitto drag radials with 450rwhp and 600rwhp all around, caught in rain - not the best, but never kept me home. In fact, got 20k miles, dozens of races and a couple years out of one set.
Like stall convertors though, it's a preference thing.

I got my MT's from Motown (used) December 2012. I don't drive it in snow months but from April to November I daily drive it. With many a smoky burnout, MV11 & MV12 + thousands of DD miles not to mention what Motown put on them - still lots of tread left.
