View Full Version : Spider Gears - Chipped Teeth

So I was changing the gear lube on my rear end and noticed I have some chipped teeth on the spider gears. Two summers ago when I was changing the clutches, I noticed some metal pieces in the bottom of the housing. I checked the ring and pinion gear teeth carefully but didn't see anything wrong. Guess I should have checked the spider gears.

Called my local Ford dealer and they say no serviceable parts are available. I'm going to button it back up tomorrow morning. It's been this way for two years now, so it's probably not going to give me any trouble. Thoughts?

Anyone have any ideas on where to either get new spider gears or a new differential?

The chipped teeth are at the top and bottom in the image below.

I'd run it. Think it should be fine.

If it's not howling, drive the piss out of it

Those chips are nothing.. Very common to see spiders missing complete chunks missing on every tooth and yet be quiet as could be. Don't give it a single thought.

^This... until it starts to howl. lol

One of the big problems now is everything is switching over to 31-spline. Was looking up info on the cobra clutch pak and even that now is 31-spline specific for the S-spring. Same thing with the spider gears. Did find that America Muscle sells the Ford 28 spline spider gears still p/n 5L3Z4215A http://www.americanmuscle.com/ford-28spline-88-spidergears-8604.html

I'd drive it too, just get as much debris out of the housing as you can.

When I changed clutches, I went with the carbon fiber clutches from a Cobra Mustang, but had to re-use my Marauder spring. The Cobra spring would not work. I should probably look for a replacement rear end. I would love to go to 4.30 gears instead of 4.10's.

On second thought, maybe I should just get an entire new differential?

So this is the 31 spline unit.

Where can I find the correct 31 spline axles?

Thanks,
Curt

Just look up axles shafts for any 06+ panther, 31-spline became standard.

One of my Christmas gifts from my wife was 31 spline axles and a diff from Sparta. Might get a better deal getting everything from him?

When I changed my diff. fluid my spider gears looked just like that. I get no howl. I just put high-quality Amsoil synthetic lube in it and cleaned everything out really well. I'm not exactly easy on my car and I've had no problems. You should be fine.
