View Full Version : Burnouts across America Tour!

:burnout: Due to newfound family obligations (all good news), I will be heading for the left coast. I should be leaving Huntsville on Sunday morning on my way to Escondito (?) CA. I believe I can make Dallas on the first day, after that, who knows? I do plan on leaving at least one set of parallel rubber stripes in each state along the way, and will have photographic evidence of each. After a visit in CA, we (I'm meeting my wife out there) will be headed home, the long way. So far, my plans include: some of rte 66, stopping in Wyoming to see the Old Faithful, stopping in S. Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore, and popping in at the Northeast Marauder get-together in Ohio. You guys (and gals) all know where you're at in relationship to these places, so if you want to have me stop by and say hey, let me know where you're at. I believe our shove off out of California day is May 17 or so, if that helps at all. P.M. me, or email me at Gnpcasey@aol.com if you think I'll be near you or something I should see on the way. This is going to be a blast! :bounce:

Steve, my wife, who was adopted, found her biological family. They have been in constant contact since, and we are going to visit. Another big upside to this is my new favorite brother in law is a Ford Employee, thereby qualifying my wife to some sort of deals! We figured we'd check out some of the sights that we always wanted to see on the return trip but are usually too busy to do. The only downside is I may not get that "George Hamilton" tan this year. Then again, there's always booths...

Okay, I arrived in Escondido last night. I took as many non-interstate roads as possible, trying to see the stuff. Got some good burnout photo's. Anyone know how to remove rubber from the lower fenders? I'll post pictures later, as right now I'm at Heller Ford getting an oil change. The trip thus far has been awesome, glad I decided against the Interstate thing. Side note to Todd, I hope you got my phone message. Well, I got to browse a little. I'll check in later. Any California dudes or dudettes, give me a holler. I post my cell in my profile.
Side note to Todd, I hope you got my phone message. Got it Paul...thanks. Unfortunately, I lost your cell #, if you get a chance please PM it to me.

Man what a ride!!! We're in Utah now, headed for Bonniville then Yellowstone. Hit a minor snag yesterday. Pulled into a gas station/convienence store in Salina, UT. The adjacent truck lot looked perfect for the Utah burnout location. I dropped the Mrs. off, with camera, and put down a 75 footer. Picked her up and off we went. About a mile or two later she asked," Why are you slowing down?" I say, "For the cop pulling me over." Up walks Salina Police Officer Mike Thompkins, and trying real hard not to laugh says, "Do you know why I'm pulling you over?" The three of us were giddy. After exchanging pleasantries, etc. I told him about the "Tour." I got away with a warning. It was cool, and I'll report the whole conversation later. Well times a wastin'. One bad thing, I don't think I'll make Ohio Sunday. Sorry to all there, but I'll catch up with all. :burnout:

Met some cool people, car is glad to be out of the mountians (definate loss of pwer over 10,000 ft.). I'll tell more when I get to a free internet area. One bit of advice for all those who are saving their cars for investment purposes, forget it, hop in and drive! This is great. I think I'll head for Nebraska and Oklahoma next!

Gordon, we're getting stills and videos, just having a blast! We are in Nebraska today, headed for Quapaw OK by evening. (It's close to Miami OK, Baxter Springs KS, and Joplin, MO). I have a little warning for those of you cruising eastern Nebraska this weekend. The place is crawling with LEO's. Officer Tim Hintz, who gave me his autograph yesterday, let me know that 66 in a 60 zone is not acceptable. He is also awed by my Marauder. To quote him directly, "I'm sure glad you didn't try to run me, I would have never caught you." I know better, radio waves travel at the speed of light, and no matter what mods I do, I can't go that fast. It's time to motor, I'll check back in this evening or so. Gordon, I'll be near Rednecksburg mid week, I'll pm you later. Looks like I'll leave the stripes in a couple states today! :burnout:

We managed to skirt around all the nasty weather here in the midwest, going to spend the day in the Quapaw OK, Baxter Springs KS area. I figured I'd give the weather a head start, don't really feel like filing a hail damage claim. One of my biggest surprises on this trip is the lack of Marauders out there. If I include the one I saw in the dealership lot in who knows where South Dakota, I've seen a total of 4. Mine, one on I59 in Alabama on the day I left, a silver one at the hotel I stayed at in Arizona (had dealer plates on it), and the one on the lot. Purusing the site a little today, noticed Kathy's on the bottle, Todd still tight-lipped (can't wait to see his deal), and some nice kills. I've had a few, mostly ricers with the chainsaw sound, but I haven't been looking too hard for them. I better get moving, time for laundry, more windshield cleaner, (man, I'm putting several species of insects on the endangered list) and a good wash. If any of the Middle Americans see me around, give me a toot.

:( Met another policeman today, this time on less joyful occasion. Seems someone in Eureka MO wanted my valve stem caps and was too lazy/ignorant/stupid/classless or whatever other adjective you may prefer, to buy his own. Looks like now I have to adjust my sig to include "black plastic valve stem caps." On the up side, I stopped at the local Ford garage for an oil change, and the nice man at the parts counter gave me the four plastic ones for free. Trip is going good, did an extra special burnout in IL to honor the king of burnouts, Sgt. Mac. The tour is nearing an end, MD tomorrow, and home on Thursday. It's still fun, and summer is here. Big cleanup job is high on my to-do list when I get home. Talk to all later.

Paul,
Been through Eureka on I-44 many times. Not far from the Six Flags park. Valve Cap theft .... how low can an individual fall??
If we make the link near Fredericksburg tomorrow, I have 4 extra chrome caps that can hold you until you can replace yours. Don't want you passing through here with those plastic caps .... Ugh !!!

Last night Chris and I meet Paul and this wife, Georgann in Hagerstown, Md. they had a stop over for the night. He had called me a little earlier in the evening and Told me his wife wanted to go for a drive in a S/C Marauder and to snap her head back a couple of times, not to disappoint we woke up the Black Bomber and meet them at the hotel. On the way to the restaurant I gave it a couple of goes and Georgann seemed impressed but I was a little disappointed in my attempts. It seems my Ram Air had more kick off the line, but then I would manually shift it from 2nd into Drive, looks like I will need some more pratice.
We sat in the Restrauant for about two hours talking about everything from Marauders, the site, their trip across the Country and even horses and Cowboy boots (Georgann & Chris). Did not get to see one of Paul's famous Burn-outs it was getting late when we got back to the hotel and they wanted to go to D.C in the morning.
Hopefully Paul will not get arrested doing Burn-outs on the White House lawn.
It was good to meet another member of our Marauder family especially one so well traveled as Paul.
Good luck and safe journeys to Paul and Georgann and keep those Burn-outs coming. :burnout:

Gordon,
Spoke to Paul on the phone about 5 PM as he and his wife were headed your way on I-70 (I think). Must have cross signals with him because I thought he was coming through Fredericksburg on I-95N. Had 4 extra valve caps for him to replace the one's that he "left" in Missouri. Oh well, maybe next time he passes through VA.

GordonB, I haven't forgotten you, I have yet to post the picture. I've been a little, no make that a lot, busy around here the past week since I've been home. It's amazing how much catching up one must do when one has been away for 6 months. It took me 3 days just to do the yard, and I only have 1/3 of an acre! I should be able to get some things done for this thread (pics, thoughts, car info, etc.) in the next day or so. I still haven't even washed my Marauder since I've been home. ;)

Okay, I'm finally catching up on my chores, so I took a little time to get some details together, specifically fuel and mileage stuff. I didn't coount the cruising around in California (about 300 miles) but the trip from Alabama out west, then back home ended up at 8234.5 miles. Along the way, I managed to burn up 352.906 gallons of premium and what passes for premium gasoline. It didn't seem to matter too much, especially at altitude, with the 91 octane. I noticed a knock condition only once, but I was also careful to try and not run too hard with the poorer fuel. I did the math, and it turns out to be an average of 23.333 mpg. Not too shabby for a 4600lb, 300+ hp car with a fully trunk, two adults, and one of them acting like a child (me). The worst tank, mileage wise, was from Flagstaff, AZ to Show Low, AZ. I got 19.135 mpg there. It was very hilly, very hot (100+F), and very pretty. The pretty part meant we stopped a lot for photos, and due to the heat, I would leave the car running with the a/c on for each photo. The best tank was from Seymor, IN to Belmont WVA. I got 27.323 mpg here. I ran mostly on the highway and mostly 72-74 mph. I've discovered this is about the best speed for fuel mileage. That's it for now, I'll post more later.

Paul T. Casey
06-19-2004, 09:57 AM
Yeah, I've had it over 27 mpg a couple times, just one of my hobbies I guess. It also shows off some of the other performance potential of the car. Speaking of the car, as all know, I had a passanger side head replacement done prior to the trip. I spent a few days doing another break in as if it were new. On the trip, the car ran great. My biggest problem once I got west of Dallas was finding 93 octane gasoline. It just doesn't exist. For the most part, 91 was readily available. This seemed okay, especially at high altitude. Performance wise, the car was as awesome as ever. It's nimble enough to have some fun on the twisty mountian roads, agile enough to make two car passes on the 2 lane roads we tried to stay on, and smooth enough to keep us refreshed for whatever adventure we were getting into. With the mods I have done, this car is perfect for this sort of trip. About the only time performance seemed a little down was when we were above 10,000 ft. Then again, my peformance was down then too! You'd be surprised how much air a Camel smoking, sea level dwelling creature like me requires. I guess it's not much different for internal combustion engines. The only other problem with the car was nature. It came as no surprise to me that its handling characteristics in the snow have not improved with age. It drives like it was on furniture casters with only a light coating of the white stuff. Good thing we didn't encounter a whole lot of the stuff. As I continue to gather my thoughts, I'll post more about the roads, people, and the sights. I'll include a few photo's also.
