View Full Version : Crazy Coolant Question

Hey guys, it's me, back from the dead.
Car has been overheating. Thought I would try to change the thermostat, and when I looked under the hood, I saw that the coolant reservoir was empty. Opened the coolant plug, and it was dry inside.
Need to add coolant, but I can't see any so I'm not sure if I need green or yellow on my 03 300A.
Next, more serious question. I'm afraid I won't like the answer. There have been no coolant leaks, none on the garage floor, etc. Where did all of my coolant go?
Thanks in advance.

My early-build 300A came with the G-05 golden-coloured coolant. Might have to drop a hose to see what's in yours.

As to where it went, you might have to fill it back up and let pressure build to see any leak.

Must burp system of air or it will overheat. Post up if you need the refill and burp procedure

Thanks. I have read all of the burp instructions, and still can't figure out how to do it without spewing hot coolant everywhere.
Still can't figure out where a system full of coolant could have gone without a drop on the ground.

Use Prestone "all makes all models".

I have been using it at my shop for a LONG time and it is great. Makes life a lot simpler.

Need to do compression test. Could be going out tailpipe. And not enough volume to blow white smoke

when egine is COLD:

step 1 - fill up the coolant reserve to the high Mark close it don't open again.

step 2- remove the coolant crossover plug and fill until it's full – replace cap

step 3 - start car for 20 seconds and shut off then go to step 2.

repeat 2, 3 untill it wont take more coolant.

look for leaks or milky oil.

Filled with coolant. Drove around for about 30 minutes in 95 degree heat. Never got hot, but hey, it's got a full new charge of coolant.
Got home, let it idle for 15 minutes in the sun and never got hot.
Checked the dipstick, oil didn't look cloudy.
Going to brother in law's shop later this week. He said he has an instrument which goes on the reservoir in place of the cap. If any engine gases are coming up through the cooling system it will indicate it on the instrument. Never heard of that before.
Still confused, as usual.
Thanks for the help.

What he is going to use checks for combustion gases, using a chemical engineer that changes color. Kind of like a drug test cops use in the field.
We do that test, it works most of the time.

If you burp it enough you don't even have to start it and lose any. The last few times I've done it where a perfect no mess, no overheat, no worries deal.
